From Software Enthusiast to Postgraduate in the UK: My Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: Early Beginnings
My fascination with software engineering ignited in 2011 while I was in the 11th grade. It was my initial exposure to programming, particularly the C language, that captivated me. At first, I was drawn to the creative aspect of coding, experimenting with various algorithms and manipulating inputs. As I delved into subjects like Java, Database Management Systems (DBMS), and Data Structures, my enthusiasm for programming deepened, leading me to pursue a degree in Computer Science Engineering (CSE).
While studying as an undergraduate, I not only honed my coding abilities but also became increasingly interested in cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, big data, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The first company to recruit from our college was Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), making it a coveted opportunity for students. I dedicated myself to preparing for the interview and successfully secured a position as an Assistant System Engineer with an annual salary of 3.4 Lakhs INR, which was standard for entry-level roles at TCS.
On September 25, 2017, I began my journey at TCS in Chennai. I vividly remember the long queue of graduates collecting their ID cards to enter the building. The initial three-month training program, known as the Initial Learning Process (ILP), divided new hires into groups based on programming languages such as C++, Java, and C#. It felt like college, but the significant difference was that we were earning a salary. I was honored to be chosen as the spokesperson for my group, forming lasting friendships with colleagues from across India.
At the conclusion of the ILP, we were reassigned to various projects across the country. I was assigned to the H&M project in Chennai, where my responsibilities initially involved routine operations and resolving tickets using the ServiceNow tool. As I progressed to my second year at TCS, I began to focus more on databases and applications, such as store scanners.
My ambition to tackle more complex technical challenges led me to apply for a master's program in the United States. I was fortunate to gain admission to the University of Texas, but my excitement was short-lived as my visa was denied three times. Confident that I would pass the visa interview, I remained on notice at TCS. Rather than retract my application, I sought opportunities with other companies and secured a position at Verizon as a Java Developer in 2019. This transition marked a significant shift from a service-based to a product-based company, where the work environment was notably different. I thrived on the technical applications I was developing.
Around this time, a friend suggested pursuing a master's degree in the United Kingdom. I decided to give it a chance, applied to several universities, and was accepted by both. Ultimately, I chose the University of Leicester to pursue an MSc in Advanced Software Engineering with Industry. This time, my visa application was approved on the first attempt, allowing me to travel to the UK to fulfill my educational aspirations.
The journey through my master's program was a whirlwind; missing my family and friends was particularly challenging. However, my passion for learning kept me motivated. The modules were compelling, and I developed a newfound interest in AWS cloud technologies. I completed my master's degree in 2022 and secured a position at ALTEN, working on web applications for Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace Engines. Additionally, I became an AWS Community Builder and started blogging on Medium to share insights about the latest concepts I learn.
I hope you found my journey engaging; thank you for reading!
