A Comprehensive Guide to My MacBook Pro Setup for Creative Work

Chapter 1: The Joy of Personalization
When acquiring a new MacBook, one of the most enjoyable aspects is customizing it to fit your unique needs. Today, I'm excited to share the essential applications that have become indispensable in my workflow.
My MacBook Pro journey began almost a year ago, and it remains one of my most rewarding investments. The day it arrived is still vivid in my memory; despite the numerous gadgets I encounter daily, the excitement of receiving a new work MacBook is unmatched. This device is specifically tailored for my professional use, where I typically spend over fifty hours weekly. Thus, choosing the right model, organizing it effectively, and installing the necessary applications is crucial.
My previous experiences with MacBooks were with two 15-inch Intel models. While they served their purpose, I never formed a deep connection with them. The first Mac that truly resonated with me was a customized 27-inch iMac from 2015, specifically designed for my graphic design business. The attachment I developed stemmed from being involved in its configuration, which made it feel more personal.
HomePod ’23 — if it ain’t broke…
I’ve been using the HomePod for about a month now, and here are my reflections.
The transition from my iMac after seven years was inevitable. It had started to lag in performance, and with the introduction of Apple silicon, I realized my tech needs had evolved. My design work continues, but content creation has become my primary focus, demanding a more flexible and portable solution. Thus, I decided to invest in a MacBook, adapting to the new working styles that emerged during the pandemic.
The new M series chips revolutionized the way I work. Tasks that previously required powerful machines can now be handled effortlessly on my MacBook. After extensive research on the latest models, I made the leap, and despite the high cost, I have never looked back. The MacBook Pro has exceeded my expectations, allowing me to future-proof my setup by selecting higher specifications.
Getting Down to Business
Of course, acquiring the MacBook Pro is just the beginning. It is only when you unbox and start using it that it becomes your own. I have been writing regularly on Medium for over a year but have never shared the specific applications that occupy my dock. Today, I’ll introduce you to my essential tools.
The lineup of applications on your dock provides insight into your professional life, and mine is no exception. If you were to peek into my dock, you'd quickly deduce that I work in content creation and design.
Section 1.1: Essential Native Apps
To my surprise, I rely heavily on the native applications that come pre-installed on my MacBook. For instance, I have always used Mac Mail as my email client. It fulfills my needs perfectly, eliminating the need to search for alternatives. The same goes for the Calendar app.
While I have Microsoft Word installed, it doesn't reside in my dock; I prefer using Pages and Numbers for everyday tasks. Familiarity breeds efficiency, and I find comfort in using these native applications.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Photos App
Recently, I added the Photos app to my dock. As I often capture images with my iPhone 14 Pro, I found it more efficient to download photos directly from the app instead of relying on AirDrop. Rediscovering the Photos app has been a pleasant surprise, as it has significantly improved over the years.
Section 1.2: Browsing Preferences
Sticking with the theme of native applications, Safari has consistently served me well. Its speed and simplicity make it my primary browser. However, I also keep Chrome handy, as it offers a better experience for uploading videos to YouTube. Some essential extensions I use are not available on Safari, prompting me to switch when necessary.
Chapter 2: Creative Applications for Content Creation
The first video, titled "macOS Setup, Preferences & Setting Guide for Pro Creative Workflow!" offers insights into optimizing your Mac for creative tasks.
I’m also a big fan of the Reminders app, which I use constantly to jot down tasks as they come to mind. It helps me maintain focus by clearing mental clutter. I utilize the Notes app similarly, storing templates for video titles, hashtags, timestamps, and affiliate links.
Music is another significant part of my workflow. My preferred app is Apple Music, while Spotify sits in my dock but is rarely used. With my musical background, I appreciate the ability to manage my personal library on Apple Music, allowing me to upload rare CDs not available for streaming.
As an avid podcast listener, I generally enjoy them during walks, but I use Apple’s Podcast app for the rare occasions I listen in my studio. Additionally, I utilize Audio Hijack, which enables me to create virtual audio interfaces, enhancing my podcast and interview recordings.
Time to Get Creative
Now, let's delve into the core of my daily operations: the creative applications I rely on. The first is Ulysses, my go-to writing app for blogs and video scripts. It’s intuitive and seamlessly integrates with WordPress, allowing me to publish content quickly.
As a long-time Adobe user, I subscribe to Creative Cloud, which provides me access to a suite of powerful applications. Currently, I have Adobe Audition, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Illustrator in my dock. Among these, Photoshop and Premiere are my primary tools, and I appreciate the synergy between the apps, which streamlines my workflow.
Screenflow and Ecamm are my chosen applications for video editing and podcasting, respectively. Both are slightly challenging to master but become invaluable once familiarized. I particularly appreciate Ecamm’s ability to capture audio from multiple guests independently, allowing for precise audio editing in post-production.
Home Run
The applications mentioned above form the backbone of my creative routine, while others, though not essential, still earn their spot in my dock. For instance, I discovered Vero, a social media platform for photographers, which inspires me with its ad-free environment and outstanding creativity.
Finally, I have a few more apps: Speedtest for internet performance monitoring, Discord for community engagement, and Waves Central for managing audio plugins. I also keep the native calculator app and Apple News for quick access to updates.
Wrapping Up
In conclusion, this is a glimpse into the applications that shape my daily workflow. Each tool plays a vital role in my content creation process, helping me stay productive and efficient. While my dock lineup may evolve, it currently serves me exceptionally well.
