University Road: A Student's Haven

My academic journey revolved around University Road, the main thoroughfare adjacent to the university.

However, my approach was anything but conventional. Perhaps it was my disregard for the expected tourist behavior or simply my innate curiosity, but I never saw myself as a visitor in this city. I was just Melanie—Melanie in Belfast, much like I was in Montreal, New York, London, Toronto, and beyond.

As Melanie in Belfast, I embraced the city with open arms and a pair of running shoes.

My Daily Explorations

Every morning started with a run before I dived into my university research. In the evenings, I would jog home from my shifts at The Gap. I arrived in early summer, and let me tell you, the rain in Belfast was something else—nothing like I had ever experienced in Africa!

Imagine navigating the city in a torrential downpour—what a way to explore! I intentionally avoided the more notorious neighborhoods, knowing their histories and boundaries, opting instead to engage with the city on my own terms. Respectful exploration was my goal.

Unexpected Connections

Interestingly, I faced little trouble during my stay, despite my appearance setting me apart. The most common question I received when people learned my religion was, "Are you a Catholic Buddhist or a Protestant Buddhist?" It was often delivered with a touch of humor.

Being in Belfast means being on guard, as the locals are acutely aware of the political landscape and adept with language. Their wit is sharp and often comes wrapped in dark humor. It took me by surprise how casually they joked about their tumultuous past.

The Pride of Belfast

Belfast residents take immense pride in their identity, shaped by their history and resilience. The humor often serves as a coping mechanism, blending levity with their serious undertones.

Many cities have areas that are best avoided after dark, and Belfast is no exception. Yet, during my time there, I witnessed a community intent on redefining their narrative, eager to showcase their vibrant identity rather than let others define it for them.

Throughout my time in Belfast, I found myself immersed in a rich culture, characterized by an acute awareness of self and a fierce pride in their land.

As I ran through the neighborhoods, often when the streets were quiet, I appreciated the opportunity to experience yet another chapter of my life.
