Achieve Success Through Vision and Determination, Not Hope

Written on

Chapter 1: The Power of Vision

In my most ambitious and exhilarating moments, I found that they had little to do with hope or motivation. Recently, I realized what truly fueled my success.

Imagine this scenario:

I have five bags, a train ticket, and I'm embarking on a journey 2,800 miles from Michigan to Seattle. With only $3,000 to my name and nothing waiting for me—no job, no home, no friends—I'm filled with excitement. I possess an unshakeable belief that I can make this work because I genuinely desire it.

When I crave something intensely, the idea of failure doesn't even cross my mind. My mindset is simply… YES. Once I board that train, returning home is not an option. The thought of not securing a job or a place to live doesn't exist in my reality. My sole focus is to pursue this new life with every ounce of energy I have.

For the past year, I immersed myself in researching Seattle. I envisioned its streets, sat in its coffee shops, and rode my bike through its charming neighborhoods and bustling areas.

I've already glimpsed Microsoft's expansive campus, the impressive twelve-story library, the water taxis, and the vibrant fish market. I can almost taste Seattle's fresh air and hear the ferry's bell ringing as it sails to Bainbridge Island. I see the colorful crosswalks in Capitol Hill.

I'm there in spirit, even if not yet in body. The decision is final—it's time to make the move.

The driving force behind my bold choices? Vision.

On a small scale, I can picture how my life could be rather than how it currently is. I focus intently on what I aspire to improve. I'm not drawing up a new state but crafting a fresh life without a predefined path.

Once I set foot in this new place, I spring into action. Late nights become my norm as I tirelessly hunt for a job and a place to stay within a week. The pressure only sharpens my focus, making the possibilities shine even brighter. Stress fuels my determination when I'm pursuing something I want; however, it drains me when I'm not.

Day and night, my vision propels me toward an existence that feels out of reach. My motivation is ignited, and I'm relentless in my pursuit. Nothing and no one will stand in my way.

Days go by as I contact numerous landlords, only to hear "no" repeatedly. I visit an apartment shared by two college students who are awaiting their financial aid. They offer me a room, but the arrangement feels dubious when they suggest I pay the highest rent and pretend I don't live there.

I refuse to compromise my values. This isn't right.

I embark on lengthy bus rides to view more rentals. It's a race against countless others vying for the same spots—many of whom have cars. I fill out applications, visit various locations, and send out around 80 inquiries.

Rejection doesn't deter me. I push forward. There is no other choice.

After four days of relentless searching, I successfully rent a spacious room in a woman's basement. I join several groups to meet new people, ultimately sticking with one writing group, and secure a job as a computer technician.

Although I discover a month later that my landlord couldn't legally rent her place, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found a home at all. My room is decent, but the rest of the house is in disarray—cluttered and smelly.

I encourage my 65-year-old roommate, whom I helped find this place, to see the potential. "Look at what it could be rather than what it is," I tell her. "This space can be beautiful; we just need to tidy it up."

And indeed, it has beauty. The kitchen offers a stunning view of the backyard filled with trees and flowers. My roommate, despite her struggles with alcohol, becomes a good friend who takes on the homey tasks while I prefer a minimalist setup—just the essentials.

In the end, she creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The space smells good, and her cooking is delightful. I trade cash for her delicious pork steaks when she asks.

Though I previously thought I preferred a simple, sparse lifestyle, I've learned to appreciate the comfort of a cozy home, something I had not considered creating for myself.

In just four days, I transformed my life, discovered my true capabilities, and built a world that felt previously unattainable. This journey required no hope or motivation but rather two fundamental and powerful traits: vision and determination.
