Writers: Avoid the Common Pitfall for True Success!

Understanding the Writer's Trap
Do you think that writing on platforms like Medium will make you wealthy?
Do you fantasize about crafting articles on mundane topics, like changing light bulbs or investing in cryptocurrency, and envision thousands being captivated by your words while you lounge on a beach sipping cocktails?
Here's the reality: that dream is unlikely to materialize.
Consider these eye-opening statistics (sourced from Quora—take them with caution!):
- A mere 6–7% of writers on Medium earn over $100 a month.
- Only around 30 writers (approximately 0.025%) manage to make $5000 monthly.
Chances are, you’re not part of that exclusive group. In fact, it’s improbable you will be, especially not in your first six months, year, or even two years. While some writers experience moderate success, earning a hundred dollars monthly, ask yourself: will an extra $100 a month significantly change your life?
It’s nice for occasional dinners, but unless you live in a developing country, $1200 a year—whether gained or lost—won’t shift your reality.
The Cycle of Despair
Now, let me ask if this routine rings a bell:
- Wake up
- Brew some coffee
- Try to meditate but end up fixating on your growing to-do list, your lack of wealth, and your writer's block
- Turn on your computer and refresh the Medium page
- Notice only 31 notifications
- Feel disheartened, especially when 25 of those alerts are from a single overly enthusiastic reader on someone else's post
- Check your Partner Program earnings and see you've made a grand total of 67 cents from the five pieces you published yesterday
- Consider a drastic career change, perhaps as a beekeeper
Does this sound familiar? I’ve been there myself—going through this cycle for weeks, even months, and I had plans to use this theme as inspiration for my February writing.
If this describes you, I empathize with your struggle. But continuing this habit won’t lead you anywhere fruitful.
Many writers even admit to torturing themselves with this routine multiple times a day! If you find yourself in this cycle, it’s time to hit the brakes and pursue something more meaningful.
The Power of Expectation
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
— John 14:2, 3
Many people have read this biblical passage yet struggle to grasp its true significance. Most believe it relates to the abundance of space in heaven, providing comfort that there’s room even for the most troubled souls.
While that interpretation holds truth, it doesn’t encapsulate the profound meaning behind these words. It's about the Law of Expectancy and Assumption.
"Ask and you shall receive."
Neville Goddard, a renowned New Thought speaker, emphasizes that achieving what you desire relies on mentally positioning yourself where you already possess those aspirations. In essence, it’s about acting and feeling "as if."
"The many mansions represent the infinite possibilities within your mind; you are the dwelling place of the Divine. In my Father's house exists a myriad of self-concepts. You could never exhaust the potential of who you can become."
— Neville
Following the Path to Success
Do you aspire to be a successful writer or a best-selling author adored by many?
Stop fixating on statistics!
Understand deep down that you are that inspiring and cherished individual, and the Law will bring that reality into existence.
Do you think Stephen King spends his days obsessing over his numbers, living and dying by them? Certainly not! He’s busy living, dreaming up new book ideas, and concentrating on his craft.
If you desire similar success—or anything close to it—you should adopt the same mindset. Medium can be a valuable platform for connecting with others, building an audience, and honing your skills, but it won’t enable you to leave your day job—at least not on its own.
Whether you check your stats today or not, they will remain unchanged. Only your perception can shift. The odds are high that those figures will only bring you down. And even if you do receive extraordinary results, that fleeting high will likely last mere minutes at best.
Let go of this obsession.
Limit your stat checks to once or twice a month to monitor your progress. Instead, concentrate on becoming a better writer. Cultivate your innate creativity and imagination. Spread positivity and light wherever you go and in everything you do.
Visualize your dream life. Articulate it to yourself daily. Write it out consistently.
For example: "I am a wildly successful writer. I engage in work that brings me joy and fulfillment. I don’t require anything more."
Even consider recording yourself stating these affirmations. Imprint them into your subconscious, the realm where all things exist and come into being.
By the Law…
It will manifest.
