Understanding Social Anxiety Among Intelligent Individuals

Chapter 1: The Struggles of Social Interaction
Navigating social situations often feels overwhelming for those of us who experience anxiety in these contexts. I find solace in solitude, as speaking in person or on the phone triggers a wave of nervousness and over-analysis. In contrast, writing and texting offer the advantage of responding at my own pace. Why is this? It seems that face-to-face interactions rarely grant me the opportunity to reflect thoughtfully. People often exhibit impatience, pressing for immediate responses.
This predicament makes me ponder: why should I feel penalized for not delivering an answer that meets your timeline? Why does your inability to comprehend my thought process lead to a barrage of frustrating follow-up inquiries? Ultimately, why should your lack of understanding become my burden?
Frequently, the only response people deserve is a simple "Oh." The conversations they initiate are often not particularly engaging to me. Yet, as humans, we feel compelled to mirror others’ interests; failing to do so risks hurting someone’s feelings.
The idea of emotional apathy truly deserves to be normalized.
The mere thought of this frustrates me. I am not defined by roles like girlfriend, wife, aunt, or mother. Can we acknowledge that I may never view your children and partners as amusing or charming as you do?
Individuals grappling with social anxiety often possess considerable intelligence. They recognize the simplicity and complexity of human behavior. It is bewildering to feel criticized for saying too little, yet also for speaking too much.
People seek access to your thoughts, even while struggling to articulate their own.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Pressure to Respond
In conversations, the pressure to provide immediate answers can be stifling. An environment where people rush for responses can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration.
