# Embracing Life's Transitions: A Journey of Loss and Growth

Chapter 1: The Two Lives We Lead
As Confucius famously noted, "We have two lives, and the second begins when we realize we only have one." This profound statement resonates deeply with my experiences over the years.
At twenty, the idea of turning thirty felt almost like a distant galaxy. However, as I approach my forties, shaped by the trials and tribulations of life, my perspective has shifted significantly.
The essence of Confucius' wisdom appears to be that we often take our initial life for granted, particularly during our youth. In those early years, time stretches endlessly before us. Our days are filled with new experiences, often unburdened by the weight of adult responsibilities.
Research from Harvard indicates that our perception of time slows down in youth because our lives are filled with rich experiences, akin to scenes captured in slow motion. Yet, for me, the turning point—when my second life truly commenced—was marked by the passing of my mother.
While I have faced the loss of several loved ones, the bond with a mother is uniquely profound. At that moment, my life was already tumultuous, and her departure felt like the final blow.
Losing her was the catalyst for my awakening. It forced me to confront the reality that we have just one life, one mother, and every moment that time gradually consumes.
The future beyond this life remains uncertain, yet I find myself less preoccupied with it. Instead, my mother’s passing infused me with a renewed urgency to live fully, to cherish every moment, to laugh, to eat, to cry, to take risks, and above all, to love deeply.
Ironically, when we lose someone dear, we often find new connections with others, sometimes in unexpected forms. During our travels, my wife and I encountered many individuals—many older than myself—who have weathered storms similar to those I face. Just recently, a wise gentleman shared a poignant epitaph:
"Remember me as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you will be; therefore, prepare to follow me."
To everyone I have encountered on this journey—family, friends, and readers of my reflections—I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. When I was piecing together the fragments of my heart, you all extended a helping hand. Thank you.
My mother was a true blessing in my life, and it was simply her time to return to nature what she had given me.
The beautiful irony is that life has gifted me with another beginning: I am going to be a father.
With love,
Anand
