# Revolutionizing CarPlay: Apple’s Vision for the Future of Driving
Written on
Chapter 1: The Evolution of CarPlay
CarPlay made its debut back in 2014 with iOS 7, allowing users of iPhone 5 and later to connect their devices to their car's audio systems and access apps. While this technology has served its purpose over the years, it has remained relatively unchanged—until Apple's recent announcement of an ambitious redesign for CarPlay.
Currently, CarPlay functions adequately, though it has its limitations. As a daily user of a CarPlay-enabled vehicle, I rely on it for radio, podcasts, and navigation, often bypassing the car’s built-in navigation system. The system also connects to my dealership for service scheduling, enhancing convenience.
Section 1.1: A New Era for CarPlay
The future is promising, as Apple plans to transform CarPlay into a fully integrated operating system.
With some vehicles now allowing drivers to store their car keys in Apple Wallet, the technology will soon recognize the driver and automatically adjust seat and mirror settings. This is just the beginning of Apple's deeper integration with automotive systems.
By 2024, with updates in iOS 16 and beyond, CarPlay is set to evolve into a comprehensive multi-screen infotainment system. Users can expect significant integration across various car systems, including personalized gauge clusters displaying speed, engine RPM, fluid temperatures, and air conditioning controls. Additionally, calendars, widgets, music, and even smart home settings will be accessible directly from the car's display.
Prominent car manufacturers already on board include Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Audi, while notable absentees like Lexus and BMW have raised eyebrows. BMW, traditionally a showcase for Apple's latest technology, is currently facing supply chain challenges, affecting its rollout of CarPlay and Android Auto.
Section 1.2: The Role of Automakers
Car manufacturers excel at producing vehicles, yet often neglect the electronic interfaces. However, with Apple's advancements, there could be a shift in this trend, as Apple is recognized for its technological prowess.
Chapter 2: The Strategic Implications
The first video titled "WWDC24: Say hello to the next generation of CarPlay design system | Apple - YouTube" dives into the innovative features and design system of the upcoming CarPlay.
In another insightful video, "The Future of Apple CarPlay | WWDC 2022 CarPlay iOS 16 Announcement - YouTube," the discussion revolves around the future directions of CarPlay and its integration with Apple’s automotive plans.
As it stands, CarPlay relies on an iPhone, which typically needs a physical connection via a lightning cable, although some models support wireless connectivity. Apple may be biding its time with this update, potentially paving the way for their long-rumored Apple Car.
Mark Gurman suggests that Apple’s gradual announcements may appear insignificant initially but could lead to substantial developments, similar to the history of iTunes leading to the iPod or HealthKit preceding the Apple Watch.
Apple's increasing involvement in the automotive sector may not only enhance their knowledge of the industry but also foster relationships that could lead to partnerships for their vehicle production.
Section 2.1: Apple’s Potential as an Industry Partner
Apple could feasibly license its infotainment technology to automakers, enabling them to save on costly development expenses. Consumers might then opt for the Apple CarPlay option at the point of purchase, allowing dealerships to recoup licensing costs from Apple.
Chapter 3: Looking Ahead
Apple's recent announcements signal a clear message to automakers, encouraging them to embrace the evolving landscape of automotive technology. For those speculating about the future of the Apple Car, the new multi-screen CarPlay is just the beginning of what’s to come.
This exploration into CarPlay's redesign may only scratch the surface of what Apple has planned. As the automotive electronics landscape shifts, we may be witnessing the dawn of a new era in infotainment systems.
