Rediscovering Self-Worth: Overcoming Feelings of Worthlessness
Written on
Chapter 1: The Weight of Worthlessness
Experiencing depression often leads individuals to grapple with feelings of worthlessness.
When dealing with mental health challenges, it’s common to feel undeserving of help or improvement. Thoughts may arise that suggest you are being punished by a higher power for past mistakes, reinforcing a sense of unworthiness. Long-term mental health struggles can lead to damaging self-talk, often fueled by the comments of those around you. Loved ones may unintentionally make you feel guilty for your sadness or inability to meet expectations.
These feelings resonate with my own experiences. Upon returning to the U.S. from Germany, I found myself questioning my value based on the perceptions of those I care about. When I sensed rejection from my closest connections, it triggered a deep introspection about my worth.
I questioned the sacrifices I made for my family. Despite pouring my heart and soul into nurturing them, I still felt inadequate. The love and effort I provided seemed insufficient, leaving me to wonder, "Why is my devotion never enough?" As a mother, I dedicated countless hours and energy, yet it felt like my contributions went unnoticed, leading to a persistent loop of self-doubt.
Moreover, my mental health struggles have impacted my ability to work, care for my family, and engage in daily life. I often find myself asking, "What value do I bring?"
Section 1.1: Understanding the Roots of Worthlessness
Feelings of worthlessness frequently accompany depression. Like many, you might spend extended periods feeling flawed or broken. You may think that with more effort or a positive mindset, things could improve.
According to Better Help, several factors can contribute to these feelings:
- Early trauma, including abuse or neglect
- Bullying during childhood or adulthood
- Job loss, financial struggles, or divorce
- Social exclusion
- Pressure to meet external demands
- Experiences of discrimination
- Mental health conditions like depression or PTSD
Experiencing failure can exacerbate feelings of worthlessness. Personally, when I make a mistake, I often engage in negative self-talk. This self-blame amplifies my sense of failure, leading me to feel deserving of misfortune.
When entrenched in this mindset, you might resist seeking help through therapy, believing that recovery is unattainable. This can result in isolation, hiding from others, and feeling like a failure.
Section 1.2: Strategies to Combat Worthlessness
Although overcoming feelings of worthlessness is challenging, it is possible to address and reframe limiting beliefs. If past trauma contributes to your feelings, consider therapeutic approaches like EMDR to process these experiences.
