Navigating the Supermarket: An Introvert's Journey

Chapter 1: The Weekly Expedition
Every Thursday brings predictable changes to my everyday carry (EDC) bag. I add a pair of oversized noise-cancelling headphones and dark sunglasses. This day is designated as my “office day,” and after confirming with Google that it’s the least crowded time, I stealthily head to the supermarket in the late afternoon.
As I arrive at the supermarket parking lot, I aim to park as far from the entrance as possible while ensuring easy access to the exit, selecting a spot two spaces away from the shopping cart return. It’s the only occasion I park with the front of my car in first.
With my sunglasses on, I disregard the cart area — who wants to push a cart that far? I grab a cart at the entrance, put on my headphones, and even if I don't play anything — be it music or podcasts — I activate the noise-cancelling feature before entering the store. My shopping list is on my smartwatch, organized according to the store’s layout, allowing me to move quickly.
Wearing headphones and sunglasses makes it simple to avoid unwanted interactions. Each week, I also purchase one random item that isn’t on my list. This spontaneous treat serves as my reward for successfully navigating the shopping experience.
After completing my purchases, I face the challenge of the parking lot again. I return to my far-off spot, remove the headphones but keep the sunglasses on, load my car quietly, and return the cart just two spaces away. I intentionally avoid parking next to the cart return to minimize the chance of bumping into someone who might spark a conversation or risk damage to my car from a careless shopper.
The drive home is one of my favorite moments of the week.
The video titled "When Introverts Go to Hell" humorously explores the challenges introverts face in social situations, making it a perfect companion piece to this discussion on supermarket excursions.
Chapter 2: The Art of Self-Care
When it comes to self-care, introverts often need to find their own unique methods. Whether it's enjoying quiet time at home or taking a peaceful drive, these moments are essential for recharge and reflection.
