Exploring ChatGPT as a Virtual Psychiatrist: My Experience

Chapter 1: The Role of ChatGPT in Mental Health
ChatGPT serves as a versatile virtual assistant, offering support beyond mere text prompts and grammar checks. At times, I find myself reflecting on my life, especially when I notice others in distress. This leads me to question, "Why am I in a relatively better situation?" The disparity in experiences can be unsettling.
After losing my father a few months ago, I've been grappling with emotions, especially as I live far from my widowed mother. Despite holding numerous degrees, I find myself without a job, balancing the challenges of raising two small children. This role can be physically, mentally, and financially taxing, compounded by occasional disputes with my spouse.
However, I recognize my privileges: I have my mother, siblings, a supportive partner, children, a solid education, creative outlets, a well-stocked pantry, access to books, interests in learning, good health, a beautiful garden, a wonderful neighborhood, and an engaged audience like you! These blessings are significant, wouldn't you agree?
Amidst global suffering—such as heatwaves, reckless accidents, mass shootings, and homelessness—my thoughts often drift to the myriad challenges people face, including job insecurities, health issues, and unexpected life changes.
In moments of reflection, I turned to ChatGPT for guidance. Its responses resonated with me, providing clarity on my feelings. Here’s a summary of its insights:
Understanding Empathy
Individuals with a high degree of empathy frequently observe the pain of others and question their own moments of joy. I recall a time when I felt resentment upon seeing a hummingbird’s nest on the ground; it stirred feelings of unfairness within me.
Survivor's Guilt
Survivor's guilt manifests as a sense of unearned happiness when others are enduring hardship. For instance, I felt this deeply after successfully navigating a complicated pregnancy through a timely C-section, knowing that many women in less fortunate circumstances do not have the same outcome.
Similarly, as I earn some income through writing on Medium, I feel a pang of guilt, recognizing that people in countries without such opportunities are left behind.
Altruism and Its Impact
Those with altruistic tendencies often prioritize the welfare of others, which can lead to discomfort when they experience joy. I remember a situation where a friend announced her pregnancy in front of a woman who longed for a child; it was an awkward moment that prompted me to shift the conversation.
Low Self-Worth
While some may grapple with feelings of low self-worth, this does not resonate with me personally. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that such feelings can hinder one's ability to embrace happiness.
Existential Questions
Many individuals reflect on the randomness of life and the fairness of happiness distribution. I often find myself questioning the discrepancies in resource allocation, particularly when I observe wealthy individuals hosting extravagant events while others struggle to meet basic needs.
Fortunately, ChatGPT also offered practical solutions for navigating these complex emotions, suggesting I:
- Practice self-compassion
- Direct my empathy towards actionable outcomes
This mindset, while common, is not debilitating. I believe it’s a natural human experience. My curiosity about psychology has only grown, prompting me to engage with ChatGPT further, especially as I navigate my mental landscape without the means to consult a psychiatrist.
