Chapter 1: The Foundation of Recovery

In the early stages of my quest for lasting sobriety, I wore my membership in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) like a badge of honor, believing it to be the sole path to a fulfilling life. AA laid the groundwork for my recovery, providing me with a toolbox filled with valuable strategies.

Throughout thirteen years filled with struggles, victories, and the ever-present temptation, I faced the emotional turmoil from my past that AA alone couldn't address. With some reluctance, I turned to professional help, realizing that achieving true sobriety meant exploring more than just one avenue.

This experience taught me a vital lesson: seeking assistance is an act of humility.

Under the guidance of Dr. Mike, alongside my AA journey, I began to uncover deep emotional wounds that needed attention—wounds hidden beneath the protective walls I had constructed to shield the troubled child within me. That inner child cried out for healing from the scars of a difficult upbringing.

While my commitment to AA and my faith in God serve as the core of my sober life—a refuge that offers peace, companionship, and purpose—I have come to recognize that the journey to sobriety is expansive and diverse. Each path is a reflection of the unique experiences and spirits of individuals seeking healing and wholeness.

Some may require additional support to navigate their own roads, each route a testament to the rich tapestry of human experience and our shared goal of recovery. AA imparted to me the understanding that I possess choices and the freedom to explore various avenues in my pursuit of wholeness and genuine sobriety.

While AA may not resolve all of life’s challenges, it continues to illuminate my path, guiding me toward the freedom to embrace my true self, rather than remaining the frightened child subject to those who do not prioritize my well-being.

It’s important to remember that what works for one may not work for another. While AA has been beneficial for me and many, if you find yourself in need of additional support, reaching out for therapy is a viable option.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
