Little did I know then, this was a clear example of a Fixed Mindset.
Over the past decade, I've cultivated a Growth Mindset. Let’s delve into the distinctions between the two.
What is a Growth Mindset?
In a nutshell, a Growth Mindset is the belief that both you and others can enhance your fundamental abilities. It revolves around the understanding that through hard work, effective strategies, and support from others, one can nurture their inherent qualities. In this mindset, intellect and talent serve merely as a foundation for growth, rather than a final destination.
A common misconception about the Growth Mindset is that it solely emphasizes effort. While effort is indeed vital, it is not sufficient by itself. A true Growth Mindset integrates effort, innovative strategies, and the willingness to accept feedback and assistance from others. By harmonizing these elements, you can effectively foster a genuine Growth Mindset.
What is a Fixed Mindset?
In a single sentence, a Fixed Mindset can be summarized as the belief that one’s abilities and qualities are unchangeable. Individuals with a Fixed Mindset tend to view setbacks in competitions or poor grades as reflections of their self-worth. Believing they possess a finite set of traits, they strive to showcase their strengths while avoiding situations that could expose their weaknesses. This mindset prioritizes the avoidance of embarrassment over the pursuit of learning—quite the opposite of a Growth Mindset.
