Insights Gained from 30 Books Read in 2023: A Year of Learning

Chapter 1: A Literary Journey Through 2023
This year marked an exciting literary adventure, starting with a return to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (books 6 and 7) and extending to 28 other books that spanned genres like nonfiction, personal growth, and science fiction. Among the titles I explored were classics such as bell hooks’ All About Love, productivity-enhancing works like Cal Newport’s Deep Work, and essential reads like David Ricco’s When the Past is Present, which I wholeheartedly recommend.
My ideal reading experience combines entertainment with enlightenment, where characters and authors draw me into their narratives, offering fresh perspectives or guidance on overcoming obstacles. Unfortunately, I found that half of the books I read this year were either entertaining but shallow or informative yet dull.
After immersing myself in countless pages, I’ve identified the novels that significantly influenced me and the key lessons they imparted.
The Defining Decade by Meg Jay, PhD
This book presents advice for individuals in their 20s and 30s, drawn from the concerns and anxieties expressed by Jay's clients.
Key Takeaway: If you aspire to settle down or start a family in your 30s, don’t wait until that milestone. Lay the groundwork in your 20s by seeking a partner, securing stable employment, and gathering necessary resources.
Deep Work by Cal Newport
In this thought-provoking book, Newport emphasizes how we often squander valuable time on social media and trivial tasks, such as responding to emails and attending unnecessary meetings.
Key Takeaway: Our productivity and efficiency can greatly improve by dedicating time to focused work in a distraction-free environment. By eliminating interruptions like coworkers, notifications, and social media, we can achieve significant breakthroughs in our projects.
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
This brief yet impactful read urges creatives to silence their inner critics and take action.
Key Takeaway: The distinction between amateurs and professionals lies in consistency. Amateurs make excuses and allow self-doubt to hinder their creative endeavors, while professionals engage in their craft daily, whether it's writing, painting, or practicing.
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Frankl’s profound narrative recounts his experiences in a concentration camp and how he discovered meaning in life despite adversity.
Key Takeaway: In moments of despair, shift your focus from “how” questions (e.g., How can I start X with no resources?) to “why” questions (e.g., Why is starting X important to me?). This change in perspective can provide clarity and motivation.
When the Past is Present by David Ricco
This essential guide helps readers process emotional baggage and heal from lingering traumas, whether they stem from family, friends, or romantic relationships.
Key Takeaway: Pay attention to your emotional reactions when someone triggers strong feelings like anxiety or anger. Ask yourself whether your response is directed at them or if it connects to past experiences with someone else.
The Creative Act by Rick Rubin
Rubin shares his insights on nurturing creativity and approaching artistic endeavors with a spiritual mindset.
Key Takeaway: Success is not measured by metrics such as views or revenue, but rather by the personal fulfillment of completing and releasing your work before moving on to the next project.
Thanks to the wisdom shared by these authors, I now feel more empowered in my work, goal-setting, and personal values. My list of "must-read" books continues to grow, so I invite you to share your recommendations or the most impactful book you've read in 2023!
