Embracing Minimalist Habits for a More Zen Life

Chapter 1 The Essence of Minimalism
Minimalism has gained traction for its ability to simplify life. As technology and the internet have made daily tasks more convenient, they have also introduced complexity into our lives. Just think about the barrage of notifications the average person receives.
How can anyone keep up with all that? The truth is, many of us can't, leading to what some call the "digital dark ages." Our minds often feel overwhelmed, leaving us functioning like zombies—alive but hardly present.
Adopting minimalist habits can help cultivate a sense of inner peace. Here are some of the strategies I’ve found beneficial.
The Art of Single-Tasking
In our modern world, multitasking has become the standard. However, I challenge this notion; I find myself utterly ineffective when I attempt to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Recently, I had a conversation with my business partner regarding our stagnation in growth. We took a step back and re-evaluated our objectives. Our aim? To work less.
Since launching our business, we've been working tirelessly. We’ve reached a point where we want to reclaim some of our time. To achieve this, we decided to focus on increasing revenue so we can hire freelancers to handle the bulk of our workload.
One of my initiatives involved transitioning our platform from Teachable to Kajabi, which would offer a 5% savings on transactions. However, our true target isn't simply to save; it's to achieve a 200% increase in revenue.
As absurd as it may sound, we realized we were concentrating on the wrong metrics. Our research indicates that introducing an annual membership model will be the key to that growth. Therefore, we must devote ourselves entirely to this singular goal, avoiding distractions, and thus far, we’ve already seen significant improvements since honing in on this focus.
This is the magic of concentration—it amplifies everything you do. However, it requires a commitment to eliminate the trivial distractions that lead you astray.
Automating Investments for Financial Freedom
This year, I’ve made a substantial profit without needing to be a financial genius. I’ve set up automated monthly investments in my preferred stocks. Once established, this process runs smoothly, resulting in a significant influx of capital into the market.
My portfolio has already seen a 20% increase despite challenging conditions. Additionally, the dividends I receive are automatically reinvested, compounding my returns over time. This approach to minimalist investing is poised to significantly enhance my family's financial future.
I no longer concern myself with stock price fluctuations, nor do I spend time deciding where to invest. I conducted my research beforehand and automated the process.
Automating investments is a powerful way to achieve financial independence and inner peace.
Organizing Your Inbox with Gmail Filters
This year, I transitioned from the frustrating Microsoft Outlook to Gmail. One of the standout features I’ve utilized extensively is the filter system. Each morning, I wake up to a clean inbox, thanks to my carefully curated email filters.
If I need to delve deeper, I can access specific folders based on my focus for the day. There’s something truly satisfying about achieving "inbox zero"—the visual confirmation from Google is almost magical.
Don't let your email consume your life. Set up filters, categorize newsletters, unsubscribe from unnecessary lists, block spam, or even consider hiring a virtual assistant for an extra layer of organization.
Taking Breaks: No Work on Weekends
While I enjoy working, I've learned the importance of downtime. In the past, I would write on my days off; now, I write full-time. However, overworking can lead to burnout, especially for creative minds, which thrive on:
- Space
- Peace
- Randomness
- Time away from work
Now, I refrain from working most weekends. I check my email once on Saturday morning and don’t reopen my inbox until Monday. The tranquility this brings is indescribable, leaving me feeling rejuvenated come Monday.
Disconnecting from work during weekends is essential.
Choosing Books Over Online Noise
The internet is filled with distractions. The quality of online content has reached an all-time low, and I find myself retreating to the serenity of traditional books.
My iPad Kindle is loaded with books, disconnected from the internet. I prefer reading well-edited and refined works over the noise of online articles.
Reading more books can help restore a sense of calm.
Decluttering Your Phone
Our smartphones often distract us from what truly matters. When my daughter sees my phone, her excitement is palpable. Yet, I’ve set strict rules regarding screen time for her.
Smartphones can dull our senses. I primarily use mine for calls and texts, steering clear of social media and disabling all notifications.
I’m also cautious about app usage; the more apps I have, the more time I waste on my phone. Instead, I keep my phone in black and white mode, removing everything except essential apps. This discipline allows me to regain a sense of tranquility.
Prioritizing Family Over TV
Television can be incredibly addictive. During my school days, I tracked my TV time, which exceeded eight hours daily—much to my teacher's dismay.
Now, I consciously choose to spend time with my daughter instead of indulging in TV shows. Those moments together create lasting memories that far outweigh the fleeting enjoyment of a Netflix binge.
Less screen time means more quality time with family.
A Philosophy of Less, Not More
To conclude, my minimalist habits revolve around the principle of "less" rather than "more." This mindset extends to my financial philosophy, as well.
Society often equates more with better, but the truth is that accumulating more leads to greater dissatisfaction. The key to a fulfilling life lies in embracing simplicity.
Trade excess for simplicity—it’s the secret to living well.
