Chapter 1: The Role of Social Media in Education

Social media platforms have undeniably woven themselves into the fabric of our everyday lives. Many individuals find themselves increasingly reliant on these services, whether it's sending messages to friends or collaborating with colleagues. This reliance fosters a continuous engagement with others across various contexts, both personal and professional. However, what happens when factors such as anxiety or fear come into play?

Social networking refers to the digital platforms through which we connect with one another. Popular examples include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Discord. These platforms are familiar to many due to their daily usage. In a similar vein, students frequently utilize social media to communicate with their classmates. The effectiveness of these interactions within an academic setting, however, is often a topic of debate. Frequently, students find themselves hesitant to engage in educational discussions via these platforms, as they are closely tied to their personal lives, complicating the establishment of a professional rapport.

While learning management systems can alleviate this issue, there are more effective integration methods. Take Canvas, for instance; it offers features like an inbox, calendar, and more. Although Canvas serves its primary function well as a learning management system, the addition of a robust social network can enhance its utility. Currently, students like me often resort to using alternative social networks, such as Discord, to connect with peers. Consequently, those who choose to avoid all social media inadvertently put themselves at a disadvantage. Particularly for introverted students, the lack of engagement with peers outside the classroom can hinder their ability to seek assistance in an educational community that isn't anchored by their institution.

Recalling my sixth-grade English class, I remember using Edmodo for class discussions, networking, and assignments. Edmodo serves as a global educational network, linking teachers and students, and exemplifies social networking in the classroom. It encourages communication between students and teachers, ensuring that everyone is included. The thrill of collaborating with peers and motivating each other is crucial. This illustrates a classroom environment that thrives both inside and outside school, fostering a community where students can connect and collaborate in person and virtually, while simultaneously promoting soft skills and active engagement. An educational platform that incorporates social networking serves a greater purpose, enhancing interaction and motivating peer relationships.

There were instances in class where I felt no urge to collaborate with others. The educational system often presumes that all students are naturally extroverted, which isn't always the case. It's not always evident that one's mindset can significantly influence the way and extent of communication with others. Without appropriate tools and encouragement, navigating new environments and meeting new people can be quite challenging. Networking among classmates should be a fundamental aspect of the college experience rather than just occasional interactions. Students seek a stronger community where individuals uplift one another, helping to conquer social anxiety and ensuring recognition.
