Embracing AI in Education: The Role of ChatGPT in Writing

Chapter 1: The Evolution of Writing in Education
As a college instructor focused on writing—specifically professional and technical writing—I initially dismissed the notion that ChatGPT could jeopardize traditional essay writing or replace human authors. I was convinced that no artificial intelligence could replicate the intricacies of human thought or express complex ideas, especially concerning innovative topics and prompts.
However, after experimenting with ChatGPT using one of my college writing assignments, I found the results surprisingly similar to a draft from a student. It became clear that AI tools like ChatGPT are poised to reshape the landscape of writing. Educators will need to incorporate these technologies into their teaching methods, while writers will learn to blend AI assistance into their workflows. The implications of ChatGPT may even prompt a shift in how we think.
My experimentation with ChatGPT involved inputting prompts from my college writing course, anticipating that the AI would struggle. One particular prompt asked students to reflect on their literacy development, defining literacy as the ability to know and do something. This allowed students to choose any topic personal to their experiences, which I doubted an AI could handle effectively. I was mistaken.
Here’s a sample of the essay generated by ChatGPT for my Literacy Narrative assignment:
"I remember a specific experience that significantly influenced my literacy practices. It was my freshman year of high school in an Honors English class. I had always viewed myself as a proficient reader and writer, but this class was a different challenge altogether..."
The AI essay continued to articulate the challenges faced by the student, including the overwhelming syllabus, demanding assignments, and the eventual realization of the importance of seeking help. ChatGPT's narrative effectively mirrored the transformation I encourage my students to explore in their writing.
The results were compelling; although slightly shorter than the required length, I would rate ChatGPT's Literacy Narrative a solid A-. It successfully met the assignment's objectives, portraying a narrative of growth much like I instruct my students to do.
In envisioning how ChatGPT might revolutionize education, it’s likely that students will leverage this technology to streamline their essay drafting process. Although ChatGPT might generate a 400-word essay for a 1000-word requirement, astute students will recognize they can enrich its rough draft with their own insights and embellishments.
ChatGPT is already capable of addressing exam questions that ask students to compare and contrast theories, define concepts, and more. As educators, we can either resist this technology or embrace it in our teaching practices, much like we have with other educational tools.
In essence, ChatGPT will become as integral to writing and critical thinking as calculators are to mathematics. Teachers will encourage students to use ChatGPT as a resource for learning, allowing them to practice and verify their higher-level thinking skills.
Instructors will prompt students to engage with ChatGPT to explore topics, assessing where the AI's reasoning may be overly simplistic or limited. This will encourage students to move beyond basic comparisons and definitions, prompting deeper analysis and evaluation.
Students will encounter advanced concepts earlier in their academic journeys. They must learn that understanding complex ideas often requires grappling with foundational concepts independently, using ChatGPT as a catalyst rather than an endpoint.
Teachers will guide students in formulating questions that elicit a range of perspectives and counterarguments from ChatGPT, which they can then integrate into their own understanding and arguments.
Writing instructors will permit students to use ChatGPT for initial drafts but will require them to transform the AI's neutral tone into their unique voices. Students will be tasked with enriching the text with greater detail, nuance, and depth, ultimately discovering the intrinsic value of writing for oneself.
If utilized effectively, ChatGPT will not deprive students of critical thinking opportunities; rather, it will enhance their learning experiences and underscore the importance of thoughtful communication.
