The Dream Deferred

High school was where it all began. I was filled with enthusiasm and a desire to share impactful stories—narratives that could inspire change. Journalism felt like my true calling, not merely a profession. Yet, in my environment, such aspirations were often drowned out by the louder calls of practicality and financial stability.

“What job security can journalism offer?” my relatives would query, their tone reflecting a mix of concern and doubt. These inquiries were not just casual questions; they embodied a cultural mindset that often favors stability and prestige over passion and purpose.

A Leap into the Unknown

In response, I took an unexpected turn. I opted to pursue hotel management—yes, hotel management. It wasn’t a passion of mine, nor was it a lifelong dream. Instead, it felt like an act of defiance against the conventional path laid out for me by my community.

But why stop there? I decided to elevate my unconventional choice further by relocating to Australia for my studies. Picture this: an Asian American guy, with no prior experience in hospitality, moving thousands of miles away to study something as unpredictable as hotel management. It was a surprising twist even I didn’t foresee.

“Australia? Why such a distant choice?” my family wondered, visibly concerned. Nevertheless, they stood by me, demonstrating their unwavering support amid my bewildering decisions.
