The past few days have been profoundly disturbing, leaving many of us in a state of disbelief. Some people were caught off guard by Putin's aggressive actions, while others were completely unaware of the impending turmoil. Each individual experiences this crisis differently, and the emotional toll is significant.

We should not forget those who are most impacted by this invasion. For many, the reality of living under constant threat is unimaginable. Most of us have had the good fortune to grow up in peace, and now, we grapple with how to contextualize these events. Yet, this situation serves as a reminder of what truly matters in our lives. It prompts us to reflect on our collective aspirations as human beings and consider ways to avert conflict and violence. While there are no straightforward answers, we must still strive for solutions.

Recently, I was inspired by our community at Elephant Journal. Despite criticisms regarding our content, we managed to publish several thoughtful pieces on the evolving situation in Ukraine. However, I noticed some comments urging us to refrain from discussing such topics. But why should we remain silent?

If public figures like Donald Trump and Ben Shapiro, who have recently engaged with international issues, can voice their opinions, then why should we hold back? Our community provides more nuanced insights than mainstream news outlets like Fox News. The compassion expressed by our writers often surpasses that of seasoned journalists, offering genuine perspectives from individuals like you and me.

Reflecting on my own contributions, I faced backlash for my views. Someone even told me to “spare us your hot takes.” I understand their frustration, but I want to highlight the thought and care that goes into these writings. Crafting articles on such significant topics requires bravery.

Every author who has dared to share their viewpoint on this conflict deserves respect. The risk of receiving criticism from online commentators is real, but true courage lies in addressing uncomfortable truths. Each article we publish raises awareness, reaching those who might otherwise remain indifferent to political matters. Why should anyone be upset about that?

Moreover, if this war encourages individuals with whom we typically disagree to act morally, isn't that a positive development?

Despite past missteps, Elon Musk responded to a plea from Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on Twitter and provided crucial assistance. When the internet infrastructure in Ukraine faltered, Musk swiftly stepped in with his satellite-based initiative, Starlink.

Initially, many didn't foresee the implications of making internet access universal. This technology plays a critical role in preventing authoritarian regimes from isolating people from vital information. While Musk has his flaws, this action highlights a significant contribution to those in need.

I don’t expect accolades for my coverage of this conflict, but it’s important to recognize our collective effort. We aspire to unite as individuals who value peace and seek to end this war. Our imperfections do not diminish our intentions, and this shared commitment offers hope for a brighter future.
