Chapter 1: Embracing Stillness at the Lake

Recently, I took some time off to recharge. After a busy year, I needed a break, especially with my wife’s pregnancy making travel a bit challenging. We opted for a staycation, taking advantage of the numerous lakes in our area. While they may not be the most breathtaking, these tranquil spots, many of which are repurposed mines, offer a peaceful retreat amidst nature—plus, they’re rarely crowded.

We often pack a picnic and spend the entire day by the water. Two activities I particularly enjoy are swimming and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Both are not only enjoyable but also provide a good workout and a sense of relaxation. I typically paddle for a while, then pause to lie on my board and engage in some yoga stretches. If you haven't tried doing yoga on a paddleboard, I highly recommend it. I also take time to meditate or ponder various thoughts while floating on the water. One insight I had during this time feels worth sharing.

When you’re just starting out in swimming or paddleboarding, you might think that quick, short strokes are the way to gain speed. However, this often leads to slower progress. Each stroke creates resistance, causing you to lose some of the momentum you've built up. The more effective approach is to take a strong, deliberate stroke, allowing yourself a brief moment of rest before the next one. By pacing yourself, you conserve energy and move faster.

An Analogy for Life

This principle can also be applied to life. The more we rush, the less we allow ourselves to grow. It’s not about cramming in as many tasks as possible or taking every shortcut. Growth requires time and simplicity. We need to trust the process, allowing ideas to settle, and giving ourselves space to breathe. Living well doesn’t mean being constantly busy. Instead, we should flow with life, trusting our instincts and capabilities. You’ll find that if you slow down and avoid overwhelming yourself, you’ll achieve greater distance and fulfillment. Contentment with what you have at this moment leads to true wealth.

Perhaps today is a good day to reflect on this idea. Consider where you can afford to slow down and recognize when resting could be more beneficial. Think about what you might need to release and what is truly worth holding onto. Enjoy life at a relaxed pace, and don’t feel pressured to experience everything out of fear of missing out.

The first video, "Lake of Contemplation," delves into the serene beauty of lakes, encouraging viewers to find peace and reflection in nature's stillness.

The second video, "Lake of Contemplation (Live)" by Fiona Joy Hawkins, offers a soothing musical experience that complements moments of meditation and contemplation by the water.
