Understanding the Great Resignation: Causes and Effects

The Rise of the Great Resignation
The Great Resignation can be likened to a tidal wave following a seismic shift; countless individuals are choosing to leave their jobs, significantly affecting companies already grappling with the repercussions of the pandemic. But what’s truly behind this movement, and how can organizations respond?

This phenomenon was initially conceptualized by Professor Anthony Klotz from Texas A&M University, who predicted that many people would reevaluate their careers once the COVID-19 crisis subsided and life returned to its former rhythm. This prediction is now a reality.
Even while the pandemic persists, companies are facing disruptions in their ability to operate effectively. Much like the aftermath of an earthquake, individuals are reflecting on their professional lives and resigning in unprecedented numbers.
The shift to remote work has granted white-collar employees greater flexibility, an improved work-life balance, and the chance to leverage their skills globally for enhanced salaries and lower living costs.
In addition, reputable firms—from consulting to corporate sectors—have exacerbated the situation by terminating local employees in high-cost areas and opting for virtual labor at reduced wages. They have also made it clear that their teams are not expected to return to the office regularly.
Is this truly a shift in power dynamics? Will only less reputable companies bear the brunt of these changes?
The reality is that having all employees work remotely does not equate to having effective virtual teams. When 95% of the workforce operates from home, the company's culture inevitably shifts, leading to a decline in brand identity and knowledge retention.
Addressing the Challenges Ahead
What appears feasible in theory might not translate effectively into practice. Companies must prioritize not only core competencies but also soft skills and experience. It is essential to develop robust and functional strategies that foster morale, attitude, motivation, and behavior among employees.
