# Understanding the Real Reasons Behind Your Lack of Motivation

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Motivation
I want to share something personal with you. For a long time, I grappled with the notion of being “unmotivated.” I would come across various content that sparked a flicker of excitement and inspiration within me, leading me to believe I had finally discovered my “motivation.” However, within just a few days, that spark would fade, and I’d find myself right back where I started, feeling disheartened.
This cycle was incredibly frustrating. Brief moments of inspiration would elevate my hopes, only to be crushed by my inability to maintain that momentum. Every few weeks, I would catch a glimpse of what it felt like to embody the person I aspired to be, but it would never endure. There was truly nothing I desired more than the capacity to remain “motivated.”
After investing countless hours in personal development, reading, and reflecting, I am now able to share with you the insights I once sought desperately. Let’s kick things off with a critical realization:
Motivation is a myth.
Many motivational speakers and influencers are misleading you, as it’s an easy way for them to garner attention. These claims might sound bewildering, so allow me to clarify.
“Motivation” acts like a performance-enhancing substance. It gives you the illusion of invincibility and enables you to achieve results far beyond your actual capabilities. When you’re under the influence of “motivation,” you can take more action, defer gratification, and withstand stress and emotional discomfort more effectively than usual.
However, this effect is temporary. After a few days or perhaps weeks, the “substance” will wear off, and you’ll revert to your baseline state. The issue arises because most individuals only establish goals and make plans when they feel “motivated,” leading to frequent failures due to setting unrealistic standards.
After experiencing a surge of motivation from a speaker urging you to hustle, you’re unlikely to aim for modest goals like five minutes of work or ten push-ups. Instead, you might set your sights on five hours of work and a two-hour workout. While this might be achievable for a day or even a week, sustaining it for a month is another story. Consequently, when you’re unable to maintain that pace, you may find yourself stuck in a rut.
Do you see the issue?
Let’s explore a solution for this in our next discussion.
Until then,
Your self-mastery coach, Max.
