# Understanding Alcohol Intolerance: My Journey to Sobriety

Chapter 1: The Hidden Dangers of Alcohol

There was a time when my body was sending distress signals, pleading for me to stop.

As Robert Downey Jr. famously said, “I don’t drink these days. I am allergic to alcohol and narcotics. I break out in handcuffs.” I was experiencing similar reactions; each sip of alcohol led to a cascade of uncomfortable symptoms. My nose would run, I felt flushed, and an intense pain would grip my throat. It wasn't merely a matter of having an alcohol dependency; my body was physically rejecting it.

Despite these alarming signs, I continued to drink. This struggle began about five years ago when, after indulging in red wine, I found myself utterly congested, unable to breathe through my nose. Picture the embarrassment of dealing with a steady stream of nasal discharge at a restaurant—it was mortifying.

My relationship with red wine was complicated. I cherished the experience of savoring a full-bodied Cabernet, and the buzz it provided felt comforting. So, why would I want to sever this bond? Unfortunately, that relationship was becoming toxic, draining me of not just memories but also my vitality—my skin, hair, and even my immune system seemed to pay the price.

Each time wine touched my lips, I faced a surge of allergic reactions. It baffled me; I had never experienced allergies before in my 40 years of life. Yet, I knew deep down that the culprit was the wine, my long-time companion, which had turned into a double-edged sword.

So, what was the solution to my runny nose and love for wine? It turns out, the histamines present in wine were to blame. A friend recommended these “magic sticks,” known as wine wand purifiers, which did provide some relief, albeit temporary. My symptoms were somewhat alleviated, but I never fully regained comfort.

Isn't it strange how we often choose discomfort over giving up a substance that wreaks havoc on our bodies? From an early age, we've been conditioned to believe that drinking is essential in social settings. I often wonder how many others might be concealing their own allergies beneath the surface.

Eventually, it became impossible to ignore the toll alcohol was taking on my body. I attempted to switch to tequila, vodka, and even beer, but any amount of alcohol would trigger my symptoms. Additionally, I was diagnosed with colitis, which became exacerbated by alcohol consumption.

My body’s response to alcohol became one of outright intolerance. It felt like an invader, and I grew increasingly ill each time I indulged. Years of drinking had likely depleted the enzymes necessary for metabolizing alcohol, leading to an internal revolt.

Every part of me—my body, mind, and spirit—was engaged in a fierce battle. If you struggle with alcohol intolerance, you may recognize some of these symptoms: diarrhea, excessive sweating, hives, facial flushing, rapid heartbeat, stomach pain, and nasal congestion, among others. I endured all of these, brushing them off until my body finally sounded the alarm, prompting me to make a change.

Alcohol intolerance can manifest suddenly or develop over time. As we age, our bodies may struggle to process alcohol, which is inherently a toxic substance. It raises the question: why do we continue to glorify drinking in our society? This societal pressure kept me tethered to alcohol, making me feel out of place when I chose to abstain.

As we age, liver function declines, complicating the processing of alcohol. After extensive research, the consensus seems clear: the most effective solution to alcohol intolerance is to stop drinking altogether. If you experience allergy-like symptoms after consuming alcohol, it's crucial to take a step back and assess your body's reactions.

All of my symptoms disappeared once I embraced sobriety. In the 500 days since, I have had moments of discomfort, but overall, my immune system has thrived.
