Starting a Business in Just One Week: Is It Feasible?

Chapter 1: The Reality Behind "Start Your Business in One Week"
The internet is flooded with enticing headlines promising you can "launch your (insert trendy business type here—eBay, Etsy, digital products, etc.) in just ONE WEEK!" These claims bombard my inbox daily.
However, the truth is that 99% of these headlines are misleading. Very few provide actionable steps that lead to actual profit within a week—except, of course, for the ones selling their "How To" courses. You might find a rare free class, but it often only covers the basics. For deeper knowledge, you'll need to invest in numerous expensive masterclasses.
As a small business owner with seven years of experience running a Virtual Assistant business, I feel compelled to clarify these misconceptions.
Let's first explore what "starting" really entails. Does it mean obtaining:
- A state license (if required)?
- A fictitious business name (if necessary)?
- Setting up a business bank account once you have your state documents?
In Pennsylvania, for instance, completing this paperwork alone typically takes about a week. Therefore, yes, it is possible to process these documents within a week. But does that imply you'll be making money by day eight? Unlikely.
Now, consider whether those seven days will allow you to:
- Identify your ideal clients and the problems you can solve for them?
- Research your competition to carve out your unique niche?
- Draft a solid business plan, which is essential for guiding your operations?
- Reach out to potential clients to market your services or products?
- Understand the tax implications of your new venture?
- Learn about your legal responsibilities?
- Secure necessary insurance coverage?
- Build a website or set up your shop on platforms like eBay or Etsy?
While my article, "The Great Blogging Lie: Tech Skills NOT Needed," centers on blogging, the same principles apply to establishing a business website.
So, can you actually complete all these tasks in a week? Probably not. Constructing a website on your own might take a week, while hiring a professional can extend the timeline to two to four weeks. Scheduling appointments with professionals (tax advisors, legal experts, insurance agents) also requires time, and each step often leads to additional tasks that can take weeks to finalize.
Section 1.1: What Kind of Business Can You Start in a Week?
If you're wondering what type of business you can feasibly start in a week and generate income, consider an eBay or Etsy shop focused on selling collectibles or unique finds.
To kick this off, you'll need a well-organized inventory of items ready for sale. Good photography and proper storage for shipping are essential. Additionally, you should have shipping supplies on hand before making any sales to avoid losing money due to underestimating shipping costs.
Refer to these links for seller policies detailing what can and cannot be sold—these are not affiliate links:
- eBay policies
- Etsy requirements
It's vital to set up a separate bank account for your business. Keep in mind that both eBay and Etsy do not process payments instantly; eBay may take 1–3 days, while Etsy can take 3–5 days to transfer funds to your account.
You must also familiarize yourself with your tax obligations, as requirements vary by state and country. Failing to understand your local regulations could lead to unexpected tax liabilities.
Remember to account for the costs associated with shipping materials, transportation to the Post Office (unless you have home pickup), and postage fees, especially if you don’t purchase through the site—this often requires upfront cash or a credit card.
Section 1.2: Other Business Options
- Print-on-Demand Business: If you're considering selling through platforms like Etsy or Redbubble, keep in mind that upfront fees exist, and you may not receive payment until after items ship. You’ll need a clear niche and understanding of your ideal customer before uploading designs.
- Writing/Blogging Business: If you plan to write for sites like Medium, be prepared to pay a membership fee upfront. Ideally, you should have multiple articles and visuals ready for your target audience. Just like other businesses, be aware of varying tax obligations and the fact that most sites pay monthly.
- Virtual Assistant Business: Unfortunately, establishing a VA business in just a week is unrealistic. While you can set the groundwork and start outreach, this venture requires a comprehensive business plan and detailed preparation.
