Sony Pulse 3D Wireless Headset: Is It Still Worth It in 2024?

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Pulse 3D Headset

The Sony Pulse 3D Wireless Gaming Headset has a name that might lead you to believe it offers cutting-edge features, but that impression is somewhat misleading. The headset is not a new innovation; rather, it reuses an older brand name from Sony’s PS3 era, which included a headset with vibration feedback—a feature now absent in this model.

Moreover, contrary to what the name suggests, you don't need this headset to experience the PS5’s 3D audio capabilities. Unlike the PS4, which restricted virtual surround sound to only Sony headsets, the PS5 allows any headset or headphones to access the new Tempest 3D audio technology with a simple menu adjustment.

Without the embellishments of "Pulse" and "3D," what you're left with is simply a "Wireless Gaming Headset," a term that, while generic, still describes this product accurately. My initial review of this headset last year on the PS4 found it to be an adequate yet unremarkable option, providing decent value for its cost.

After gifting my original pair to a friend, I decided to reacquire the headset to compare it against Sony's newer offerings after finally securing a PS5. I was curious about the exclusive EQ settings available on the console.

Having used the Pulse 3D again for a couple of weeks, I regret my past choice. The market now boasts superior alternatives, and by the end of this review, the headset will be wishing I hadn’t rated it with a score.

Section 1.1: Overview of Features

The Pulse 3D headset is available in black or white, retailing for $99.99 (official site here). Unfortunately, it offers limited color options compared to the DualSense controller and the side panels for the PS5, which means achieving a fully coordinated aesthetic is impossible unless you opt for these two shades.

Included in the package are the headset, a USB-C charging cable, a compact wireless USB-A dongle, and a 3.5mm backup connection cable. While it’s commendable that Sony includes a wired option, the headset's battery life is disappointingly short, lasting only up to 12 hours—far below the average for similar products.

Section 1.2: Performance Analysis

Audio performance is satisfactory, with a well-balanced midrange, although the bass leaves much to be desired when compared to other gaming headsets. Although it appears to be a closed-back design, it performs similarly to semi-open models, lacking adequate noise isolation. Gamers in noisy environments will likely find external sounds seeping through.

The comfort level is average at best. The ear pads appear thicker than they are, with hard plastic concealed beneath a faux-leather cover. The ear openings are slightly smaller than those on competing models, but they accommodate my ears adequately. The adjustable head strap is surprisingly comfortable and fits my larger-than-average head well, although thicker pads would enhance long-term wearability.

Chapter 2: Design and Usability

With a somewhat uninspiring sound profile, short battery life, and mediocre comfort, the Pulse 3D headset's standout feature is its industrial design. It complements the PS5’s aesthetic beautifully, but a wider color range would have made it even more appealing.

Mic performance is decent but not remarkable, using an in-ear-cup design that hasn't improved since my last review. A recent addition is the software EQ accessible on the PS5, allowing for sound signature adjustments. However, it's puzzling that this feature is exclusive to the Pulse 3D rather than available for all headsets, mirroring the previous restriction on 3D sound.

In the video "The PS5 Pulse 3D Review | A Must-Buy or a Waste of Money?", the reviewer delves into the headset's features and performance, offering insights into whether it's worth the investment.

Another perspective can be found in the video titled "Pulse 3D PS5 Headset Review - Still Worth Buying in 2023?", which explores the headset's viability in today's gaming landscape.

Conclusion: Is It Worth It?

In the current market, the Pulse 3D headset struggles to justify its $99 price tag, especially when compared to superior alternatives like the Razer Barracuda X 2022 Edition, which offers better mic quality, comfort, and battery life. Even budget options like the Logitech G435 present a more compelling package with comparable performance and features.

Sony's newer Inzone models seem to have addressed some of these shortcomings, particularly regarding microphone quality, but the Pulse 3D remains a lackluster option. If you seek a headset that perfectly matches your PS5, you might consider it; otherwise, it's advisable to explore better alternatives.
