The Rising Phenomenon of Deepfakes: Navigating Reality and Illusion

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Deepfakes

Deepfakes are re-emerging, but this time with a significant shift. In previous instances, such as the notable Tom Cruise deepfake from 2021, the technology seemed relatively niche. However, with rapid advancements in AI software, creating deepfakes is now within reach for the general public. Recently, a 31-year-old construction worker from Chicago shared AI-generated images of Pope Francis in a white puffer jacket on Reddit, which quickly went viral, misleading millions.

Before the Pope deepfake, another viral moment featured AI-created images of Donald Trump being arrested. While the creator clarified that these images were fabricated, it nonetheless raised important questions about the authenticity of information.

Deepfakes extend beyond just images and videos; they also include manipulated audio content. A remarkable instance involves Roberto Nickson, who used Kanye West's voice to produce entirely new music tracks.

Section 1.1: The Dark Side of Deepfakes

There is a captivating allure surrounding the use of celebrities in fictitious contexts, likely driven by the playful nature of meme culture on social media. Many memes aim to entertain or humorously comment on public figures. However, a more troubling aspect of deepfakes is emerging. Increasingly, celebrities and prominent women find their likenesses exploited for degrading sexual content without their consent.

According to research from Sensity AI, which has been tracking deepfake videos online since December 2018, a staggering 90% of deepfake footage involves non-consensual pornography, predominantly targeting women. MrDeepFakes stands out as one of the leading platforms hosting explicit deepfake content, attracting around 17 million visitors each month.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Culture of Deepfakes

The distinction between what is authentic and what is fabricated is becoming increasingly nebulous, and society may not be prepared for this reality. Deepfakes are likely to become a staple in our news consumption. As the creation of deepfakes becomes simpler, the internet serves as an ideal channel for their dissemination.

As we transition into an age filled with avatars, digital humans, advanced CGI, film de-aging, and sophisticated 3D technologies like Unreal Engine, we might witness a convergence of the digital and physical realms.

Interestingly, the situation is not wholly negative for actors and celebrities. If they choose to grant permission for their likeness to be used—be it for commercials, marketing, or video games, and receive compensation for it—this could prove beneficial. We may also see new media formats where individuals leverage their own likeness and voice to craft a digital persona, essentially creating enhanced versions of themselves.
