Reflecting on 27 Years: A Journey of Growth and Gratitude

Written on

Milestones in Life

September 9th marks a significant date in my life, a day that is a powerful reminder of my journey. Every year, we accumulate moments that serve as markers of our existence, shaping who we are and who we will become. The most crucial of these moments is undoubtedly the day we took our first breath.

It’s a day filled with a mix of pain, fear, and love, all wrapped up in the innocence of a newborn. We enter the world as curious beings, without knowledge, skills, or language, yet we are alive and full of potential. I believe we all share this initial experience—arriving into a chaotic world, where the focus is on that one pivotal moment: our first inhale.

Celebrating 27 Years

As I reflect on the past 27 years, I recognize the growth, stress, and increasing self-awareness that have accompanied me on this journey. It’s amusing to think that even at a young age, I struggled with the concept of letting go.

What have you discovered by the age of 27?

Shouldn’t we have life all figured out by now? What’s the next step in this journey?

In truth, I believe that the path ahead remains uncertain. We often face the same mix of frustration and excitement as we navigate our lives. I once thought I’d be further along by now—perhaps more successful or wealthier, with a clearer direction. Yet, I find myself on a different path than I initially envisioned.

The Control We Seek

As humans, we strive for control over our surroundings—from the temperature in our environment to our emotional responses. We seek to tame our feelings, often yearning for validation, even if it comes through indirect means.

I initially considered creating a list of "27 lessons learned," filled with motivational quotes. However, that seemed clichéd and repetitive. The lessons I’ve learned over these 27 years are likely similar to what you’ve experienced or will experience.

Instead, I choose to embrace gratitude—not merely for reaching this age, but for all the versions of myself that have emerged, faded, or yet to be realized. These various iterations have defined my past and will continue to influence my future.

A Thankful Perspective

I express my gratitude to God, the universe, and my higher self. I appreciate the open doors and the many that were abruptly closed. Each experience has contributed to a future that remains both a mystery and a carefully orchestrated event.

Another year has gone by, and I don’t feel older. I still feel like that 18-year-old embarking on college or that 9-year-old trying on shoulder pads for the first time. I embody all those versions and so much more.

What are your thoughts on aging?
