# Prioritize Your Personal Life Over Your Job Commitments

As I scrolled through my Facebook feed, I stumbled upon a thought-provoking post from a podcast titled “LIVE kidfree.” The post stated:
“If motherhood were a job description, few would apply.”
This clever phrasing captured my attention, prompting me to reflect on its deeper meaning. Motherhood, along with other parenting responsibilities, represents a lifelong commitment that typically offers no financial compensation. Yet, many individuals willingly embrace this lifestyle. So, why is it that these same mothers wouldn’t consider it if it were an actual job with salary and benefits?
The question arises: Why do we often regard our jobs with more seriousness than our daily lives?
Consider this: countless hours are devoted to scouring job listings across various platforms. We thoroughly research prospective employers, examining salaries and reviews from current employees. Even when we secure an interview, doubts may linger about whether attending is worth our time.
In contrast, when it comes to being a parent, spouse, caretaker, or any other lifelong role that offers a salary of $0.00 and no tangible benefits, many people take on these responsibilities without hesitation. In fact, when you think about it, these roles often require us to invest our own resources! Imagine if you had to pay your employer to work!
What unpaid, sacrificial roles do you currently fulfill that you would never consider applying for if they were actual jobs? Are there responsibilities that your loved ones expect you to undertake, ones you wouldn’t accept even if someone like Jeff Bezos offered you payment? Identify these roles and stand firm against any peer pressure! Remember, this is your life, not theirs. No one will come to your rescue if you radically alter your life to satisfy others, only to regret it soon after.
This isn’t to say that these life roles are inherently negative. What I urge you to do is to take your personal life—beyond what you do for a paycheck—more seriously. You should take pride in your choices, the roles you embrace, and the individuals you allow into your life to share joy, challenges, and memories.
