Chapter 1: Introduction to Notion for Writers
I often find myself struggling with organization, which is crucial for every aspect of my life, including brainstorming article ideas for Medium. To tackle this challenge, I turned to Notion, a versatile and free application that allows for efficient organization of various tasks. The deeper I delve into its features, the more I appreciate its capabilities.
Here's an overview of how I use Notion to manage my writing projects effectively.
Section 1.1: My Notion Template Overview
I designed a straightforward template to help me catalog all my article ideas. This template has significantly improved my ability to track thoughts and streamline the writing process. Below is the structure of the template:
- Title: There’s a designated area to input the article title. Clicking on it leads to a dedicated page for notes or utilizes one of the two article outline templates I've created.
- Status: You can monitor the progress of each article by selecting from various options: researching, writing, editing, submitted, scheduled, and published.
- Category: Choose a basic category for your article. This feature is beneficial when writing across multiple topics.
- SEO Keywords: Begin identifying keywords that you want to associate with your article. This serves as a useful planning tool if you're aiming for a prominent writer tag in a specific area. Kristina God's list of top writer tags is an excellent reference.
- Notes: Include a brief description or two about your idea.
- Submit Date: Track when you submitted your article to a publication or set personal deadlines.
- Publication: This section allows you to select the publication you intend to submit your article to.
Subsection 1.1.1: Efficient Organization with Sorting and Filtering
You can sort the list by status or publication, which is particularly useful as your list expands. This capability allows you to categorize ideas you're currently researching, editing, and more, which aids in enhancing productivity by alleviating the feeling of overwhelm when you’re unsure of what to tackle next. Whenever inspiration strikes, jot it down in your list to begin the processing stage.
Section 1.2: Feedback and Improvements
I welcome any feedback regarding the template. If you encounter any confusion or have suggestions for additional features, please feel free to comment below. This is my first foray into creating a Notion template, and I truly value any advice on improving it.
