Chapter 1: Minecraft 1.20 Update Overview

At the recent Minecraft Live event in 2022, Mojang shared some exciting information about the forthcoming 1.20 update, projected to be released in spring 2023. The first snapshot will be available shortly, showcasing some of the new features players can expect. Among the highlights was the announcement of the Sniffer, the winner of the recent mob vote.

Here’s a brief introduction to the Sniffer from Mojang:

Let me introduce you to the Sniffer, one of the three mobs you could vote for this year! Once extinct, this mob can be revived. Explore underwater ruins to find Sniffer eggs, bring them to the surface, and nurture them until they hatch. These gentle creatures possess remarkable horticultural abilities, capable of discovering ancient seeds that can be cultivated into unique plants!

Unlike prior significant updates, Mojang has yet to officially name this one, expressing a desire to collaborate with the community for its development.

During the event, Mojang revealed several key features that will be included in the update. Here are the notable ones:

Section 1.1: New Default Skins

The 1.20 update will introduce seven new default skins, alongside the classic Steve skin. This addition allows players greater diversity in how they represent themselves without having to switch to custom skins immediately.

Section 1.2: Bamboo Wood Type

Bamboo will now feature a plank variant similar to other logs, accompanied by new crafting materials. Mojang presented various builds that incorporate this material, including a boat variant that can be crafted using bamboo.

Subsection 1.2.1: Chiseled Bookshelves

Chiseled bookshelves will serve as a new type of bookshelf, capable of storing six regular books, enchanted books, and books and quills. They can also be integrated with a Redstone comparator to emit a Redstone signal.

Section 1.3: Hanging Signs

Hanging signs will be introduced as a new variant that can dangle from the side of a block, underneath a full block, or from smaller blocks like fences and chains. These signs can be crafted from stripped logs and chains, as well as all wood types, including bamboo. Similar to standard signs, the text can be made to glow using glow ink sacs.

Section 1.4: Camels

Camels will join the Sniffer as a new entity. Unlike the Sniffer, these creatures are rideable, accommodating two players at once. Their height offers protection from mobs like zombies and husks, and they can leap over wide gaps, such as rivers and ravines.

I am eager to learn more about this update and can’t wait to test these exciting features in the upcoming snapshot!
