Testing is scheduled for July and August 2022, with production set to begin in September, October, and November, aiming for initial deliveries before the year concludes. Lex Hoefsloot, the CEO and co-founder, along with co-founder Koen van Ham, emphasizes a vision of a future where driving is clean and hassle-free, minimizing reliance on plug-in charging.

Lightyear originated in 2016 after its founders won the 2013 World Solar Challenge, an international competition featuring solar vehicles racing across Australia. They point out that currently, only 0.5% of vehicles worldwide are electric, highlighting the urgency to accelerate the transition to sustainable automobiles by 2040, particularly as carbon dioxide emissions continue to rise by 20%.

In discussing environmental preservation alongside personal mobility, Hoefsloot raises a critical question: “How do we maintain our lifestyle while protecting the planet?” The Lightyear 0 aims to address this by offering an efficient alternative that reduces charging needs and extends driving range.

The Lightyear 0 is engineered for convenience and sustainability. It can travel up to 300 miles (approximately 500 kilometers) daily, utilizing just household outlets and solar energy. The vehicle is expected to be seen on Dutch roads shortly for test drives.

Lightyear is also working on the Lightyear 1, which will be produced on a larger scale and at a more accessible price, while the Lightyear 2 is anticipated to launch in 2024/2025.

The Lightyear 0 boasts 5 square meters of efficient, patented double-curved solar cells on its roof and hood, capable of generating an additional 70 kilometers of range per day in summer conditions. With an average commute of 35 kilometers, summer driving could require no additional charging.

The vehicle features electric motors in each wheel, minimizing energy loss, and is touted as the most aerodynamically efficient family car, with a drag coefficient of less than 0.19 Cd. Without solar assistance, it can achieve a range of up to 560 kilometers at a highway speed of 110 km/hour.

The Lightyear 0 is 5 meters in length and weighs 1,575 kilograms, constructed from reclaimed and recycled carbon fiber, which contributes to a reduced carbon footprint. The design includes a spacious cabin, facilitated by in-wheel motors that free up space for essential electronics. Additionally, the vehicle’s steering wheel is crafted from plant-based leather, while the interior fabrics incorporate recycled plastics.
