Chapter 1: Introduction to the Quantum AI Series

The Quantum AI Series showcases exclusive discussions with global leaders driving the advancements in quantum computing. In the fifth episode of the second season, Maëva Ghonda, founder and chair of the Quantum AI Institute, engages in a dialogue with Dr. Jan Goetz, the CEO of IQM, a pioneering company in the field of quantum computing.

Section 1.1: Meet Dr. Jan Goetz

Maëva: Hello! Thank you for joining us for the Executive Talks in our Quantum AI Series. Today, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jan Goetz. As a prominent quantum physicist and CEO of IQM, Dr. Goetz leads the charge in developing next-generation quantum computers.

IQM, located in Finland, boasts a remarkable team of international experts focused on creating on-premise systems tailored for high-performance computing applications. With over EUR 71 million in funding, including Finland's largest seed investment round, IQM is positioned at the forefront of quantum technology innovation. Dr. Goetz holds a Ph.D. in superconducting quantum circuits from the Technical University of Munich and has previously served as a Marie Curie Fellow at Aalto University in Helsinki, where he is also a lecturer. Additionally, he is an active member of the Board of the European Innovation Council and the European Quantum Industry Consortium, and he serves on the German Federal Economic Senate.

Section 1.2: Exploring IQM’s Unique Value Proposition

Maëva: Dr. Goetz, welcome!

Jan: Thank you for having me.

Maëva: I appreciate your willingness to join us! Your insights are always valuable. To kick things off, I noticed your company has embraced a high-performance computing (HPC) strategy. What sets you apart in this space?

Jan: To put it simply, we are a hardware-focused company that designs and builds quantum computers. We cover the entire hardware value chain. Primarily, we act as a systems integrator, developing quantum processors and utilizing advanced design tools for chipsets. We have access to a state-owned foundry in Finland and have established our own facility for fabricating superconducting chips. Additionally, we integrate these components with control electronics and the necessary software to operate quantum computers.

Our strategic vision involves positioning our systems within supercomputing centers, as we believe quantum computing should be integrated into the broader supercomputing environment. Therefore, we aim to market complete systems to supercomputing centers where they can operate alongside classical CPU clusters, GPUs, and other computing architectures.

Chapter 2: Collaboration with Atos

In this segment, Dr. Goetz discusses his partnership with Atos, a key player in the supercomputing domain.

Jan: Within the supercomputing landscape, several providers supply classical infrastructure, and Atos is a significant collaborator. Together, we are developing common interfaces to seamlessly integrate our quantum computers into the existing supercomputing framework. Atos focuses on classical computing, while we contribute the quantum aspect, ensuring effective communication between the two systems. We believe this collaboration will allow us to create scalable solutions that enable our quantum technology to reach numerous supercomputing centers globally.
