Exploring the Nature of Time: Does the Past Still Exist?

Written on

Chapter 1: A Personal Reflection on Tragedy

In 2001, a tragic event occurred that profoundly impacted my perspective. In March, the “Entre os Rios” bridge in Castelo de Paiva, Portugal, collapsed, resulting in the untimely deaths of 59 individuals. Such incidents are rare in my vicinity, and when they do occur, they evoke a pervasive sense of fear and discomfort, as if tragedy has struck too close to home.

My father crossed a significant bridge daily for work, and as he returned each evening, I found myself anxiously waiting on the stairs to ensure he had made it home safely. This incident as a child instilled a deep-seated questioning of my safety in the world.

The “Entre os Rios” bridge's collapse, a reminder of fragility.

As the initial shock faded, witnessing the anguish of the victims' families led me to ponder whether such tragedies could be averted. What if we could rewind time to March 3, 2001, and issue warnings about the impending disaster? This thought process ignited my desire to explore the complexities of reality.

Existential Questions

Eventually, I found myself grappling with profound inquiries: Does the past exist, or is it merely a memory? Is the present the only tangible reality we possess? What if the past lingers somewhere, just out of reach? The most perplexing thought of all: Am I still living those moments from years ago?

Despite my relentless curiosity, I remain uncertain—it's a subject under continuous exploration and debate, likely to persist for years to come. These thoughts weighed heavily on me, even invading my dreams.

One particularly haunting dream featured my mother hanging clothes on a sunny day. From a distance, I smiled and raised my hand to greet her, only to witness an unimaginable scene unfold: she turned and called my name.

Childhood memory

A vivid recollection from childhood.

In disbelief, I observed my younger self running from behind the house, as my mother beckoned, “Come, it’s time for lunch!” I stood frozen, overwhelmed by panic. What could I do? Would anyone believe me? Was I destined to wait for the future, wasting precious years?

This nightmare, reminiscent of a plot in the Netflix series “Dark,” felt uncomfortably familiar yet fascinating.

Thought Experiment: Perception of Time

As I mentioned, the existence of the past is uncertain. What we can assert is that our understanding is merely a reflection of our interpretation of the world around us. Physical phenomena can significantly alter our perception of time.

Let’s consider a thought experiment to challenge our notions of past and present.

Scientific illustration of perception

An illustration showcasing different perspectives.

Picture Chandler on a bus, while Joey stands outside. Joey witnesses two lightning bolts strike locations A and B simultaneously. Relieved that neither hit the bus, he later discusses the event with Chandler, only to discover they recall it differently.

Joey insists both bolts struck at the same moment, while Chandler is convinced that bolt B hit first. This discrepancy arises from their differing positions: Joey sees both bolts at once, while Chandler, moving towards bolt B and away from bolt A, perceives them at different times.

Now, let’s amplify this scenario. Imagine Chandler’s bus traveling at a significant fraction of the speed of light. Joey still perceives the bolts striking simultaneously, but Chandler’s experience is drastically altered by his velocity.

At such high speeds, the light from bolt A may take years to reach him, although it’s happening in Joey's immediate present.

Conclusions: The Nature of Reality

This thought experiment illustrates that what occurs in Joey's present may not be part of Chandler's reality for years. According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, no viewpoint is inherently more valid than another; both Joey and Chandler’s experiences are legitimate.

An insight into the complexities of time perception.

These reflections represent my perspective on this intricate topic. While not definitive proof of the past's existence, they highlight how our perception of reality can be influenced by various factors.
