Confidence is often perceived as a delicate concept, easily shaken or dismantled by minor incidents. We frequently hear advice to "appear confident" or to obtain items that can enhance our confidence. However, what if the essence of confidence resides within our minds and can be attained without any cost?

In my unique journey as the world's first female flying car racing pilot, an FPV drone racing enthusiast, and a content creator, I've been labeled "confident" in my abilities by many. Yet, there were moments when others attempted to undermine my self-assurance, a tale for another time. The key distinction between myself and my colleagues was that I genuinely believed in my potential. Even when confronted with formidable challenges, I would reassure myself that success was within reach.

To illustrate this point, consider the following evidence: the belief in one's capabilities is the crucial first step toward actual achievement.

A study conducted at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, later published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, explored this hypothesis. The researchers aimed to determine how our confidence in athletic abilities significantly influences actual performance.

During the study, twenty-eight participants, previously hesitant to exercise, were placed on stationary bikes for a specific duration. Their heart rates and VO2 levels were monitored. Once the exercise concluded, the participants were divided into two groups based on their bike performance. The "high confidence" group was informed they were among the fittest, while the "low confidence" group received a less flattering assessment.

After a brief cooldown period, both groups were asked to return for another exercise session and rate their enjoyment. Surprisingly, the "high confidence" group reported greater enjoyment compared to the "low confidence" group. This trend intensified when participants were encouraged to exert more effort; those who believed in their fitness levels performed significantly better than those who did not.

Individuals who had faith in their abilities completed the exercise successfully, despite no real difference in their actual fitness levels.

Self-Efficacy and Its Impact

In 1977, psychologist Albert Bandura introduced the concept of self-efficacy, asserting that performance is not solely dependent on actual abilities but also on one's perception of those abilities.

Imagine this scenario: you have a passion for drawing and believe you possess talent. However, if a few envious individuals tell you that you lack skill, you may start to internalize this negative feedback, ultimately stifling your creative expression.

The issue is not your drawing ability but rather your perception of it. Over the decades since Bandura's introduction of self-efficacy, numerous studies have confirmed that higher confidence in one's abilities correlates with improved performance.

Thus, if you believe your drawings are exceptional, you are likely to continue honing your skills, leading to even greater improvement.

By 1998, researchers Alexander Stajkovic and Fred Luthans confirmed this notion through an extensive review of 114 studies involving 22,000 participants. They concluded that believing in your abilities is the first step to achieving them. Conversely, a lack of belief ensures failure.

Building Your Confidence

Not long ago, I would have dismissed the idea that standing in front of a mirror and reciting positive affirmations was anything but eccentric. However, I have since recognized the transformative power of positive self-talk.

In the book "Scientific Healing Affirmations," Paramhansa Yogananda discusses the efficacy of affirmations and how to implement them effectively. While it's not solely about speaking to your reflection, the inner dialogue you maintain is crucial. I highly recommend exploring this book for deeper insights.

Another effective method for fostering positive affirmations is through the use of affirmation cards. Personally, I find the "Notes To Mindfulness" journal and the affirmation cards from Intelligent Change to be incredibly impactful. These tools have significantly altered my perspective on confidence, especially during times of uncertainty.
