Embracing Freelancing: A Shift Towards Self-Sufficiency

Written on

Chapter 1: The Rise of the Freelance Generation

The concept of financial abundance is shifting towards a focus on the quality of our work rather than the duration we put in. My understanding of this truth has deepened through real-world experiences that extend far beyond classroom discussions.

Recently, I came across a ZDNet article that referred to today's workforce as the "freelance generation." This term emerges from the striking realization that younger individuals are less concerned about saving for retirement and more focused on achieving a fulfilling life with their available resources.

The article states that "Gen Z and young Millennials in the US are twice as likely to engage in freelance work or anticipate doing so compared to those over 35," highlighting that "only 31% of adults over 35 are considering freelancing at any point in their careers." This trend does not surprise me; while older generations may still cling to the traditional 9–5 job as the pinnacle of security, my generation has recognized a different reality.

Section 1.1: Changing Definitions of Success

In earlier times, success was measured by milestones such as homeownership, family creation, and financial stability. Attending a reputable university, graduating with good grades, and securing a stable, high-paying job were seen as the pathways to a "successful" life.

For those who checked all the boxes, job hunting was straightforward. You could easily select a position that appealed to you, "grab" it, and keep it for a reasonable period. Back then, opportunities seemed abundant, creating a comforting sense of security.

Now, however, the landscape has shifted dramatically.

Section 1.2: The Illusion of Stability

Today, homeownership and raising a family have transformed into luxuries rather than standard achievements. People are forced to reevaluate their expectations, often sharing living spaces with friends or family to manage costs and avoid financial instability.

Having entered the post-education workforce, I have made several observations that cannot be learned through textbooks alone:

  1. Oversupply of Job Seekers: There is a surplus of individuals seeking employment, leading to fierce competition for a limited number of positions.
  2. Rejection Rates: Regardless of qualifications or prestigious education, the likelihood of rejection remains high, especially when competing against hundreds of other applicants.
  3. Job Security is Elusive: Even when securing a job feels like a triumph, there is no guarantee of long-term employment, as employers can terminate positions at any time.
  4. Networking Over Skill: Many of my opportunities have arisen from personal connections rather than solely on merit. If potential collaborators cannot envision a casual rapport, the chances of working together diminish significantly.

These factors indicate that having talent alone is no longer sufficient for success.

Chapter 2: The Necessity of Freelancing

Freelancing has always existed, prompting individuals to contemplate what unique skills they can offer to the world. Historically, some have chosen not to work for others, leading to the emergence of entrepreneurs who recognize that traditional employment primarily benefits the employer.

Working for someone else often results in a realization later in life that, despite financial success, personal fulfillment and health may have been compromised. As the workforce grows and job openings dwindle, many are compelled to seek answers from within, discovering that freelancing may be their best option for financial independence.

In the freelance realm, there is no need for intermediaries to dictate your worth. For those without networks or support, freelancing offers a pathway to express their skills and talents directly, enabling them to create their own financial opportunities.

Having a laptop and a drive to share your unique contributions fosters a mindset of abundance. This approach recognizes that opportunities are limitless when you take charge of your professional journey.

Ultimately, the key to a fulfilling life often lies within ourselves, a lesson that must be imparted to those preparing to navigate today’s realities.
