The Long Road Through Education: A Personal Reflection

Written on

Chapter 1: The Academic Journey

Reflecting on nearly a decade spent in education, I find myself questioning the value of my three degrees in relation to my current career path.

My journey began immediately after high school when I enrolled in a community college. After two years, I obtained an Associate's degree and transitioned to a large university in a bustling city. The experience was vastly different from what I had anticipated. Alone in an unfamiliar environment, hours away from family, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery.

College life was challenging. At my university, I had the freedom to choose courses without strict prerequisites, which led to a chaotic academic schedule filled with distractions: late-night parties, sleeping in, and skipping classes. I must admit, I was not the stellar student I once was. Despite my success in community college, the university's demanding curriculum caused me to falter, ultimately resulting in my removal from the program after just one year. This setback forced me to take a semester off to reassess my goals.

After spotting an advertisement for a private university while watching a movie, I decided to apply and was thrilled to gain admission. This institution offered a more supportive environment with smaller class sizes, allowing me to thrive academically once again. A few years later, I proudly graduated.

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

Section 1.1: Entering the Workforce

Upon graduation, I was working part-time at a bank. They offered full-time positions, but the pay was less than $10 an hour, with no salary increase upon earning a degree. This prompted me to search for better opportunities, eventually landing a corporate job that I often discuss in my stories here on Medium.

While the salary at my new job was less than the $40K I had envisioned, it was still a significant improvement over my previous role. I enjoyed excellent benefits and newfound respect from colleagues, which were both rewarding. My employer’s support was evident when I incurred no medical expenses during significant life events, like childbirth and my husband's surgery. During my time there, I purchased my first car and home, and I felt valued in my role.

Initially, I believed I would only stay with that company for a year, but seven years later, I found myself still employed there. Although a degree wasn’t mandatory for my position, it did result in a higher pay grade compared to my non-degreed coworkers.

While at this job, I also pursued my Master's degree, funded by my employer. Yet, despite these achievements, I felt unfulfilled. The career trajectory they envisioned for me was not appealing, and after several years, I began applying for positions outside the company while dabbling in side hustles.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Entrepreneurial Shift

Exploring entrepreneurial ventures

Chapter 2: Embracing Entrepreneurship

Among the various side hustles I explored, one stood out: starting an e-commerce business. This venture has since evolved into what I consider my final job—entrepreneurship. The flexibility and independence of this career path allow me to envision continuing this work well into retirement. I dream of a future where I can travel, connect with family, and enjoy life while still earning an income.

My journey has spanned eight years in higher education and three degrees that I no longer utilize. Despite the stress and challenges I faced in a job I disliked, I appreciate the experiences that have shaped me. If I were a college student today, I might reconsider pursuing a traditional education route. While some jobs still require degrees, many do not, and in my current business, formal education feels less relevant.

Ultimately, I find myself not using my degrees, and I question the applicability of what I learned in school to my current endeavors. My academic history has been a winding path through both education and career choices.
