The region of Dacia, now part of Romania, was once home to the Dacians, an ancient civilization. In 101 AD, the Romans, led by Emperor Trajan, began their conquest of this area, culminating in their victory five years later. A column in Rome, known as the Forum of Trajan, still commemorates these pivotal events.
The Roman province of Dacia was officially established in 106 AD. Under Emperor Hadrian, it became fortified, reflecting a typical process of Romanization. Despite the dominant influence of Roman culture and the Latin language, the indigenous traditions persisted among the inhabitants.
Professor Peter Z. Revesz from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has made a significant breakthrough regarding the ancient practices that continued in Romanized provinces. His findings have been published in "Mediterranean Archeology and Archaeometry."

The American researcher claims to have finally cracked the enigmatic inscription that has puzzled experts for over a century. The sphinx, discovered in the 19th century, came to be owned by an unknown count in Western Europe but was stolen around 1848, leaving only a detailed illustration behind.
In his article, Professor Revesz presents a translation of the inscription from the bronze statue, believed to date back to the early 3rd century while Dacia was under Roman governance.
“The bronze sphinx shares notable characteristics with the renowned Sphinx of Naxians from the 6th century BCE, currently displayed in the Archaeological Museum in Delphi,” asserts Professor Revesz. This marble sphinx, a votive offering from the people of Naxos, stands nearly 3 meters tall.
“It seems likely that the cult of the sphinx migrated to Dacia from the Greek island of Naxos. I have established that the inscription is composed in an archaic Greek alphabet,” the scholar states.

“Nonetheless, the phonetic symbols used in the inscription render the Greek text nonsensical. This has sparked intrigue among researchers since the artifact's initial discovery,” the author explains.
“It appears the scribe intended to convey a message in a different language while utilizing the Greek script. I discovered that the letters in this brief verse were inscribed in proto-Hungarian, which is significant due to its archaic characters being read from right to left,” Professor Revesz elaborates.
He believes the inscription translates to: “Behold the sacred lion, pay homage to it.” This suggests the statue served as an object of reverence for its owners.
“The deciphered text is particularly unique since the sphinx cult was not a mainstream aspect of ancient Roman mythology. It provides valuable insights into beliefs held by minority groups during that era,” notes Professor Revesz.
