Chapter 1: Introduction to Compelling Sci-Fi and Fantasy
To write captivating science fiction and fantasy, an author must possess a solid grasp of the English language and composition skills. These genres have gained immense popularity, prompting Authority Magazine to launch a series titled "How To Write Compelling Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories." This series features discussions with authors and experts in the field to uncover the secrets behind successful storytelling.
As part of this initiative, I had the privilege of interviewing PA Vasey, an acclaimed author known for his imaginative science fiction works. His debut novel, Trinity's Legacy, was released to critical acclaim in 2019, followed by award-winning sequels, Trinity's Fall and Trinity Evolution. His latest endeavor, Harbinger, represents his most ambitious project yet. In addition to his writing, PA Vasey is a full-time Cancer Physician with over 200 publications in cancer research. Originally from Newcastle, UK, he now resides in Brisbane, Australia, with his wife, Andrea, and their chocolate spoodle, Luna. An avid cyclist, he enjoys exploring both Australian and European terrains during his free time.
Before we delve into the core of our discussion, could you share what initially attracted you to writing as a storytelling medium?
At the age of fourteen, I encountered the novelization of Star Wars before the film's release. The narrative captivated me, allowing me to visualize the characters and their intricate backstories. While the movie had its merits, the novel provided a richer experience. Writing empowers readers to engage in 'world-building,' enabling them to infuse their interpretations into the author's narrative. In contrast, movies and television present a complete vision, leaving little room for personal imagination. The power of the written word to evoke emotions and imagery is a unique experience.
Section 1.1: Key Traits for Success as a Writer
As a successful author, what three character traits do you attribute most to your achievements? Could you provide examples for each?
- Diligence and Time Management: My medical career demands long hours, so I must utilize my 'spare time' efficiently and remain focused while writing.
- Creativity and Imagination: Crafting engaging stories from established scientific facts requires a significant amount of creativity. For instance, I built an entire novel around the real interstellar object, 'Oumuamua', which is essentially a kilometer-long rock!
- Determination: My unwavering drive to succeed has guided me throughout my career. From aspiring to be a doctor to becoming a cancer specialist, my determination mirrors my dedication to writing. I took up cycling at forty and quickly participated in significant events across Europe, showcasing my commitment.
Subsection 1.1.1: Current Projects and Goals
What exciting projects are you currently pursuing or aspire to create? What are your objectives for these endeavors?
I’m currently about two-thirds through the first draft of my next book, which I aim to finish by mid-year. The story is set a century into the future on a post-apocalyptic Earth inhabited by androids with no recollection of their origins or the planet's past. It incorporates themes of A.I. and humanity’s future, but intriguingly, no aliens or humans—at least not yet! My ambition is to see it in bookstores, and I'm focused on securing formal representation as an author.
Chapter 2: Defining Sci-Fi and Fantasy
This video discusses the nuances of writing mystery within a science fiction framework, emphasizing the skills needed to blend genres effectively.
Section 2.1: Distinguishing Sci-Fi from Speculative Fiction
Let’s clarify how you define science fiction and fantasy, and how they differ from speculative fiction.
I view science fiction as an exploration of science-based 'what if?' scenarios derived from established and emerging scientific knowledge, characterized by internal logic. Conversely, fantasy often delves into the realm of the impossible, incorporating elements like wizards and supernatural beings. I use the term 'speculative fiction' as an umbrella that encompasses both genres, which allows for limitless narrative possibilities.
Section 2.2: The Endurance of Written Fiction
Despite rapid advancements in media and communication, novels and written narratives persist. What do you believe contributes to the growing popularity of written sci-fi?
Reading, in general, is on the rise, and sci-fi offers an escape into new realms, fostering curiosity about science and encouraging critical thinking across all ages. It introduces readers to possible futures, helping them process the complexities of the present. In an age of misinformation, literature provides a vital framework for understanding reality, reflecting our fears and aspirations through relatable characters in settings that resonate with contemporary life.
Chapter 3: Benefits of Reading Sci-Fi
This video explores innovative ways to teach science fiction and fantasy, discussing strategies to spark creativity in students.
Section 3.1: Reading vs. Viewing Sci-Fi
What advantages do you see in reading sci-fi compared to watching it on screen?
Reading actively engages the mind, enhancing knowledge, vocabulary, concentration, and analytical skills. Sci-fi literature offers a unique opportunity to tackle pertinent issues related to the future and ethical dilemmas in a safe, imaginative space. While film and television adaptations are enjoyable, novels allow deeper character exploration and development, providing a richer narrative experience. Many fans of the Harry Potter series would agree that the books offer more depth than the films, despite their cinematic appeal.
Section 3.2: Inspirations and Influences
Which authors and artists have influenced your writing journey?
From a young age, I gravitated toward science fiction, devouring works by Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Frank Herbert. Their world-building and visionary narratives inspired my imagination. Upon moving to Australia, I discovered Matthew Reilly's Contest, which captivated me with its thrilling pace. However, it was Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space trilogy that ultimately compelled me to write and explore my own creative potential.
Section 3.3: A Question for Alastair Reynolds
If you could pose a question to your favorite science fiction author, what would it be?
I would love to ask Alastair Reynolds which literary works inspired him and how they shaped his early writing journey.
Chapter 4: The Author's Identity
How would you describe your writing style, and could you share a passage that exemplifies it?
I consider my writing articulate and occasionally vivid, yet rooted in realism. My narratives are character-driven, aiming to challenge readers while remaining ethical. Here’s an excerpt from near the conclusion of my second novel, TRINITY'S FALL:
“There's nothing valuable for you in there,” came a woman's voice from the corner of the room.
I hit a light switch, illuminating the space. A middle-aged woman sat at a desk, legs crossed. She took a drag on her cigarette, eyes narrowing at me. “What the hell are you supposed to be?” she queried, flicking ashes to the floor.
I realized my appearance must seem bizarre to her. My one-piece garment, devoid of seams or pockets, was chosen by Cain for lab work. My hair was styled to match my outfit, and I wore a striking strip of shadow across my eyes, concealing their luminous green hue.
“I’m not supposed to be anything,” I replied, irritation creeping in. “And you're mistaken about the value here.”
To my surprise, she burst into laughter, her voice rough and mocking. “I meant there’s nothing for you in there,” she countered defiantly.
“Why do you think that?” I pressed, confused.
Her expression hardened. “Because what’s been done here is immoral and against the law of God.”
This dialogue illustrates my aim to build complex characters in challenging situations, inviting readers to engage deeply with the narrative.
Chapter 5: Essential Traits for Writing Compelling Sci-Fi
What five elements do you believe are essential for crafting engaging science fiction and fantasy stories?
- Language Mastery: A strong command of English and composition is crucial. Errors can distract readers and diminish their engagement with the plot.
- Scientific Background: A solid understanding of science is vital for world-building and explaining concepts to readers effectively.
- Imagination and Creativity: This is a fundamental requirement for any writer.
- Reading Widely: Exposure to various genres enhances creativity and helps writers incorporate diverse elements into their narratives.
- Relatable Protagonists: A believable and relatable main character is essential; without this, the story risks becoming a mere collection of events without emotional resonance.
Section 5.1: Inspiration from Other Authors
Is there someone you would love to share a meal with, particularly in the realm of writing?
Living in Australia, I would relish the opportunity to have breakfast or lunch with Matthew Reilly. I’m eager to learn about his journey as an author and the insights he gained while achieving global success.
