Augmented reality (AR) has been around in various forms for decades, but only recently have the necessary technologies emerged to fully harness its potential. Essentially, AR translates extensive data and analytics into visual formats like images or animations that blend seamlessly with the real world. Currently, most AR applications are accessed through mobile devices, but there's a clear shift towards hands-free devices such as head-mounted displays and smart glasses.
While many are familiar with basic AR apps like Snapchat filters and Pokémon Go, the technology is being utilized in far more impactful ways in both consumer and B2B contexts. For instance, numerous car models now feature AR "heads-up" displays that project navigation, collision warnings, and other critical information directly into the driver's line of sight. Additionally, countless businesses are piloting wearable AR technology that overlays production or service instructions for industry workers, gradually replacing traditional manuals and training methods.
AR represents a novel paradigm for delivering information, likely to revolutionize how data is organized, processed, and distributed online. Although the internet has transformed how we gather, share, and access information, its current model—displaying data on flat screens—has significant drawbacks. It requires users to mentally translate 2-D information for practical use in a 3-D context. As anyone who has followed a manual to fix an office copier can attest, this can be quite challenging. AR enables individuals to concurrently engage with both real and digital elements by overlaying digital data directly onto tangible objects or settings, minimizing the cognitive leap between the two. This capability enhances our ability to quickly and accurately absorb information, make informed decisions, and execute tasks efficiently.
Section 1.1: The Evolution of Interaction
Traditionally, people have interacted with devices through physical controls such as buttons and knobs, with touchscreens becoming more commonplace in recent times. The rise of smart consumer products (SCPs) has further shifted this dynamic, allowing users to manage devices remotely via mobile applications.
AR takes user interaction to a whole new level. With an AR headset, users can manipulate a virtual control panel projected directly onto the device. Soon, individuals using smart glasses will be able to activate a virtual interface simply by gazing at or pointing to the device. For instance, a worker equipped with smart glasses could walk along a production line, monitor machine performance, and adjust settings without needing to physically touch the equipment.
Despite still being in its nascent stages within commercial products, the potential for AR interaction is groundbreaking. The Reality Editor, developed by the Fluid Interfaces group at MIT's Media Lab, exemplifies this rapid evolution. This augmented reality tool allows users to easily create interactive AR experiences linked to any SCP. By pointing a smartphone or tablet at a device—or eventually looking at it through smart glasses—users can visualize its digital interfaces and functionalities, enabling control through hand gestures, voice commands, or another smart device. For example, Reality Editor can guide a user in adjusting the color and brightness of a smart light bulb and setting voice commands such as "bright" or "mood" to activate it. Alternatively, different light settings can be assigned to buttons on a smart switch for user convenience.

In contrast, virtual reality (VR) immerses users in an entirely new setting created and rendered by computers.
